What makes it even better is that they are a stone\u2019s throw away from each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Michael Murray is the 35-year-old Doncaster-born son of a property developer<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/gallery\/first-look-inside-new-sports-32692639\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">.<\/a> The former club promoter succeeded his father-in-law, Mike Ashley, in May 2022 , as the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/gallery\/first-look-inside-new-sports-32692639\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO of Frasers Group<\/a>. The parent group owns <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/stores-last-day-liverpool-one-32676364\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>, Evans Cycles, Jack Wills, and House of Fraser,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/gallery\/first-look-inside-new-sports-32692639\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> as well as Sports Direct and Flannels<\/a> &#8211; both of which, as of this week, now have flagship stores in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Michael started his career by running festivals and student nights and investing in bars while at university. But since his appointment, he has been at the forefront of focusing on the company\u2019s elevation strategy to rebrand the business &#8211; part of this included getting the stamp of approval from Scousers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Speaking to the ECHO<\/a> inside the new <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/everything-know-sports-direct-opens-32681977\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports Direct store on Church Street<\/a> before it officially opened to the public, he said: \u201cPeople take things for granted in London, but Liverpool is the place to be, people want to be here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_JS384651856.jpg\" alt=\"The new Sports Direct Jordan and Nike section downstairs\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The new Sports Direct Jordan and Nike section downstairs<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cLiverpool is the tastemaker of the UK in many ways; our brand partners invest so much to win over the Liverpool people. It is a huge sporting and cultural background with the two teams, and our brands recognise that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cWe want this big store to create a huge credibility as people want to come into a store rather than shop online these days. We&#8217;ve done over 300 stores now, and we&#8217;ve learnt from every single one. We are past the learning stage and now in the fine-tuning stage. The biggest hurdle is always going to be cost; the costs are enormous, and so there\u2019s always room for improvement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Michael\u2019s career began by running festivals and student nights while a student at Reading University. The former Cumbria Sedbergh private school pupil kicked off his property investments, buying two bars, and taking inspiration from his dad Mick who co-founded Doncaster\u2019s biggest landlord, Lazarus Properties, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/aug\/05\/michael-murray-mike-ashley-frasers-group-sports-direct\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Guardian.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_JS384651884.jpg\" alt=\"The new Sports Direct shop in Liverpool city centre\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The new Sports Direct shop in Liverpool city centre<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Michael said that where Sports Direct is now compared to eight years ago is a completely different ball game. He recalled how back then, they were known for their cheapness and bargains, and now, they want to pride themselves on being a one-stop shop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Inside the Compton House building, Sports Direct now stocks everything from Adidas, Puma, Boss, Calvin Klein, Converse, and Nike. The top floor of M&amp;S&#8217;s <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/nostalgia\/new-era-historic-city-centre-32687497\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">former home<\/a> is now occupied by an Everlast Gym, which boasts an official <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/hyrox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HYROXLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HYROX<\/a> centre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2_JS384652020.jpg\" alt=\"Inside the new Everlast gym above Sports Direct in Liverpool city centre\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Inside the new Everlast gym above Sports Direct in Liverpool city centre<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Michael reckons the gym will easily have 7,000 members in a few months. Having a workout space on the top floor of a historic building might sound familiar, and that is because it is the same layout that near neighbour Flannels follows. Michael<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> told the ECHO<\/a> that his company has invested \u00a325m into both stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Flannels&#8217; flagship store took over the iconic<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/nostalgia\/flashback-owen-owen---drapers-7692733\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Owen Owen building<\/a>, which was home to Sports Direct and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/tesco\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesco<\/a>, in June 2022. Set over seven floors, the Liverpool shop features a beauty destination, ready-to-wear luxury fashion and streetwear, Barry&#8217;s fitness studio, and it previously had its own rooftop restaurant. Fast forward to today, and the restaurant is no more, but now, on the bottom floor, is HiiGRIND coffee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">At the time, Michael said: \u201cWe recognise Liverpool as a powerhouse of culture and style &#8211; it\u2019s a symbiotic home for Flannels.
