In essence, users can ask their genetics direct questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZKAKFVVYP5BKHFVCLZ42XQ2R44\">Why am I not responding well to my medication?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TQWNLRJ4SFCYJD2ZHIGGFG6EKU\">Why do I have high testosterone?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RUTJOQ5J3BEKLEVLPLWKABAHDQ\">Why do I have recurring cases of gout?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GHWOREX5Q5E6TBN5FGD7VNQK64\">But instead of receiving broad, sometimes unnecessarily disconcerting information from a website like WebMD \u2014 potential diagnoses ranging from a common cold to cancer \u2014 the platform generates answers based precisely on the user\u2019s genetics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LHWOUW6D2RD2BIK3MYGMVOTSJ4\">This is <a href=\"https:\/\/bystro.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/bystro.io\/\">Bystro<\/a>, an artificial intelligence genomics research assistant being honed in the Boston Seaport space of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/boston\/2019\/06\/massmutual-to-donate-floor-of-new-boston-seaport-building-to-masschallenge-accelerator-program-for-startups.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/boston\/2019\/06\/massmutual-to-donate-floor-of-new-boston-seaport-building-to-masschallenge-accelerator-program-for-startups.html\">MassChallenge<\/a>, a nonprofit that aims to support and accelerate entrepreneurship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"43C32WUO3JAGBMYZLMW74HAX6Y\">The AI startup combines elements of Ancestry.com, search engines and primary health care into comprehensible takeaways for researchers, doctors and individuals. In May, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theresearchinsights.com\/reports\/ai-in-healthcare-market-6261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theresearchinsights.com\/reports\/ai-in-healthcare-market-6261\">Research Insights<\/a> report estimated the global market was valued at $26.6 billion in 2024 and could reach $187.7 billion by 2030, a growth of 38%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SO3VWCC4FRGCXNOXKL7ITONJWE\">Bystro has the ability to translate DNA ranging from just one person to a dataset of hundreds of thousands of individuals. If it reaches its full potential, one of its co-founders thinks it could \u201cchange precision medicine worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MSP3XJWD6BGE3AWD2RJ2KRF2HM\">\u201cWe\u2019re giving people Broad-level research access,\u201d said Bystro CEO and co-founder Alex Kotlar, referring to the Broad Institute, a Cambridge-based world-renowned biomedical and genomic research center affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.<\/p>\n<p>The brains behind Bystro<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JP5247OH5FGF5PCU72B4PTGZLE\">Kotlar\u2019s interest in health and genetics dates back to the earliest years of his life, as an immigrant from Ukraine whose family fled the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Family members grew increasingly sick with cancer in the years that followed, and several ultimately passed away within six months of each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LS5XNIL53JCDLCJAQHFVBKGYEA\">Direct connections between their deaths and Chernobyl were never established, but still inferred. Kotlar was raised being told he had a 50% increased risk of developing cancer during his lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PP7X5IQTTNCWFAN3ZTQE4LA3ZQ\">After grappling with his own health issues in his early 20s, Kotlar, 39, decided to enter a pre-med program and ultimately pursued a Ph.D. in genetics at Emory University. That\u2019s where the seeds for Bystro were sown. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BK7VSJIOEBE3JFVT5E6KRBTD54\">\u201cI had this idea to make a Google-like search engine for genetics,\u201d Kotlar said. \u201cI saw what Google was able to do: index the world\u2019s information and make it so that I could ask a question and get a reasonable answer. She was instantly drawn to the Bystro pitch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KXGDYWPCDBG7ZKKEJWJPQQKJJI\">\u201cI was like, \u2018Everybody should be using this,\u2019\u201d Trevino said. \u201cI want genetics to be accessible for everybody. It shouldn\u2019t be locked behind all of this software that\u2019s just really hard to use. It\u2019s poorly maintained in academia, and it\u2019s really a huge struggle to get anyone up to the level of a technical expert in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JRNN32UDEFH6PABMT6VUWMXQUM\">Completing the Bystro trio, co-founder Mason Alban, 38, entered the picture from an unlikely place. He was an actor who had studied at Emerson College, achieving roles in several major plays, movies and TV shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GUKZMUAYMZA7ZDPBRHUF3OMN2Q\">On the side, he was always looking for interesting startup endeavors, and his own health challenges made him particularly intrigued by Kotlar\u2019s developing project when they crossed paths at a party years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AX5OQEFX4JDBRKJGUTYUTARBYI\">Battling long-standing lethargy, fatigue, gout and hearing loss, Alban had gone to doctors across Boston and was still bereft of concrete answers. When he ran his DNA through Bystro, he was \u201cblown away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YEEWXWI7OVHAZPZ5OOGUUMJO4Y\">Alban explained that Bystro conveyed he had specific gene variants that contributed to his hearing loss, as well as another variant that affected his response to the gout medication he\u2019d been prescribed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CBOMA6VCLRDXRIE3W6FKAI5B3Y\">He also learned, for the first time in his life, he was lactose intolerant. When he cut out dairy, he felt better than ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JY22N6BOGNHZPGUYWDG3KHG75Q\">The company\u2019s goal, Alban said, \u201cis to give everyone agency over their health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YRXEVESERRDNLBY7L2CFZZ3DKA\">Thomas Wingo, involved in the early stages of inception and still Bystro\u2019s chief scientific officer, is an associate director at the University of California, Davis Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Research Center.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bystro AI genetic startup\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/EQU6RF7I2FAKXBVPAVQNOUIA7Y.jpg\"\/>Bystro, an AI &#8216;direct consumer genetics&#8217; platform, is a startup company led by, from left, Alex Kotlar, Cristina Trevino and Mason Alban. They work out of the MassChallenge space in Boston&#8217;s Seaport.Hadley BarndollarHow \u2018ChatGPT for genetics\u2019 works<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PLYXQNVUSFGJHN7W37ARI35PPM\">A \u201cChatGPT for genetics,\u201d as Kotlar dubs it, Bystro analyzes complex genetic data \u2014 likely inaccessible to anyone without an advanced genetics education \u2014 and then provides insights in plain English based on user prompts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MNBKLKBD4VFKTG7FBQU2QT7EOQ\">It enables people to ask sequences of questions about a set of DNA and, in turn, receive specific answers regarding genetic observations, potential diagnoses, risk prediction, medications, ancestry and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L5SGCF4ROZBCTH427NFPOA5B5M\">\u201cA person doesn\u2019t come with an instruction manual,\u201d Kotlar said. \u201cEverybody\u2019s unique. And so if you\u2019re actually doing tailored therapies and tailored diagnosis, you have to be able to respond dynamically to that person\u2019s unique profile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GBO4UAEIFZE4FIVSUZ27KFQOT4\">Still in its early launch stages, their goal is to see the Bystro platform offered to researchers and universities, doctors and then individual users. As a geneticist, there is so much information I wish I could tell people deeply, and Bystro is able to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3R5WOZG5LVAJPCWIIDME3HLMXE\">Importantly, every response generated by Bystro comes with a disclaimer: the findings should be reviewed with a physician or clinical pharmacist who has expertise. They should not be used to self-diagnose and self-medicate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OONEPSXHRNGNZPFPCLWTUXTK3M\">\u201cYou should absolutely talk to your physician about this,\u201d Kotlar said. \u201c(Bystro) is a personal research tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AI explosion in health care<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"65BDIYLSHBGBTFFJ5MCF4U6O2M\">Massachusetts is working to bill itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/is-massachusetts-keeping-pace-with-the-ai-technology-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/07\/is-massachusetts-keeping-pace-with-the-ai-technology-race.html\">as a national artificial intelligence hub<\/a>. And given the state\u2019s top health systems, a marriage between the emerging technology and medicine is perhaps inevitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DF5KK73WBNFWFEVQRJCO4Z5LXI\">AI is increasingly being used in hospital settings, from interpreting results to drafting patient notes to analyzing scans. Mass General Brigham, for example, is using AI for 15,000 patients currently without a primary care doctor \u2014 an app questions patients, reviews medical records and produces a list of potential diagnoses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/10\/12\/business\/mass-general-brigham-ai-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/10\/12\/business\/mass-general-brigham-ai-patients\/\">according to recent reporting by the Boston Globe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J6HMV4OXN5CPJDSXZP64BXLMOI\">This year, Israel\u2019s Sheba Medical Center \u2014 one of the top medical centers in the world \u2014 announced it is expanding into Boston in 2026 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/05\/top-middle-eastern-hospital-coming-to-mass-with-ai-startup-generator.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/05\/top-middle-eastern-hospital-coming-to-mass-with-ai-startup-generator.html\">its AI health care startup incubator<\/a>, aiming to introduce international companies <a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">with cutting-edge developments<\/a> into the U.S. market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XYQF6N6XP5BYFAZAZYXGJNRJ5Q\">But AI\u2019s rise in health care hasn\u2019t come <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/09\/nations-largest-retail-chain-braces-21m-employees-for-ai-job-impacts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/09\/nations-largest-retail-chain-braces-21m-employees-for-ai-job-impacts.html\">without controversy<\/a> \u2014 particularly debates over ethics, potential inaccuracies and data privacy concerns. Mainly, it leads with, \u201cI didn\u2019t come to this thinking AI and health care is an awesome idea.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O4MQ7Y5SQRHRZCUS4TBQYEWHOA\">Rather, he wanted to see how far he could take natural language processing \u2014 a branch of AI that enables computers to comprehend, interpret and generate human language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N3RDEW6YVVGNNKKA6KRN2P2AZA\">Just like with all AI platforms, there are concerns that Bystro might share the wrong information with users and make mistakes. Kotlar argued the same can be said for humans, who are also not \u201cfully deterministic machines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IFHQDANM3RBYLHTYMTNDYP24TE\">Bystro is also launching in the shadows of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/03\/company-valued-at-6b-in-2021-comes-crashing-down-files-for-bankruptcy-amid-data-breach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/2025\/03\/company-valued-at-6b-in-2021-comes-crashing-down-files-for-bankruptcy-amid-data-breach.html\">23andMe bankruptcy case earlier this year<\/a> that followed a data breach, related lawsuits and struggling sales. As a result of the bankruptcy, a trove of genetic data on millions of people was essentially put on the market for the highest bidder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XWHZJJGM7RFE3D2IZUKZBROQ5M\">People are concerned about privacy in the age of AI \u2014 medical data is highly sensitive, and data breaches are becoming increasingly common. DNA specifically is attractive to hackers for exploitation because it is profitable and unchangeable, unlike passwords or credit card numbers, for example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4RAYY3246FFBPCZZDOH4LFOEUY\">Kotlar acknowledges those concerns. He said Bystro doesn\u2019t hold onto the genetic data that fuels the platform\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TDKE4C4VV5BSNDCWZNXK6EGARU\">\u201cIt gets deleted right away,\u201d he said. \u201cIt gets transformed into the way that Bystro needs it and then gets discarded. And the dataset that\u2019s there is your dataset. It\u2019s like you\u2019ve uploaded something to Google Drive, and you can just delete it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"542EEXMA5BEM7GIJTE7AE6COYA\">It can certainly be tempting for companies to hold onto genetic data for research purposes.
