Hello Insiders, <\/p>\n I appreciate every book I choose for my Book Club<\/a>. I personally read and select each book with you, the reader, in mind. My 119th selection, A Guardian and a Thief, I can almost guarantee you will be compelled to finish. It’s by Megha Majumdar, an author who I feel is destined to become one of the world’s renowned storytellers. When I first met her, I told her what Quincy Jones shared with me when we finished filming The Color Purple in 1985: “Your future is so bright it burns my eyes!” <\/p>\n I’m bedazzled by her warmth, intelligence, and sensitivity. She’s a natural storyteller with an instinct for capturing the humanness of her characters, along with their rhythms, voice, and truth. Her new novel is going to hit you in the gut like it did me.<\/p>\n The novel takes us on a mother’s desperate search to recover her family’s stolen immigration documents before time runs out. And whether you’re from Kolkata, India, where the story takes place, or Kokomo, Indiana, or Hoboken, New Jersey, or if you’re a mother who feels responsible for the survival of her family, you will relate. <\/p>\n Every sentence is illuminated by the sheer beauty and originality of Megha’s writing\u2014even the way she describes old potatoes as having “sprouted white eyeballs.” How did you think of that? I asked Megha that very question when we discussed the book at a Starbucks coffeehouse in New York City. She said that her secret to writing is about \u201clooking with attention.\u201d It\u2019s about staying in a moment, even if it seems ordinary or boring, until you notice something extraordinary in it. I would argue that this is not just the secret to writing about the world, but the secret to existing in it: Be present, look with attention, and you will be rewarded with glimpses of divinity all around you.<\/p>\n I hope you’ll watch “Oprah’s Book Club: Presented by Starbucks” on YouTube.<\/a> She has a delightful, assured presence as a new mother of two. Her baby boy was only a month old when we taped at Starbucks! <\/p>\n Make it a point for one day or one hour, if that’s all you can afford, to notice the way Megha notices the world and see if you can look at your life through a different lens. The lens of wonder.
