Peter & Barbie Reynolds were kidnapped by the Taliban in AfghanistanCredit: Supplied 5<\/p>\n The couple are being held at Pul\u2013e-Charkhi maximum security jail in KabulCredit: rebuildconsultants 5<\/p>\n The couple were arrested near their home in Bamiyan<\/p>\n The couple have been held at Kabul’s Pul-e-Charkhi jail for more than nine weeks after being detained by the Taliban<\/a> on February 1. <\/p>\n In a payphone recording shared with The Sunday Times<\/a>, Peter described the horrific conditions inside the jail.<\/p>\n Peter said: \u201cI\u2019ve been joined up with rapists and murderers by handcuffs and ankle cuffs, including a man who killed his wife and three children, shouting away, a demon-possessed man.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued: “The atmosphere is pretty shocking. I am learning a lot about the underbelly of Afghanistan. <\/p>\n “The prison<\/a> guards shout all the time and beat people with a piece of piping. <\/p>\n “It’s a horrible atmosphere \u2014 the nearest thing to hell I can imagine.”<\/p>\n Peter added that he has lost weight while in the jail as he receives just one meal a day. <\/p>\n The meal is usually naan bread and chickpeas, with green tea for breakfast.<\/p>\n A lawyer working for the European Union<\/a> mission was allowed to bring the Brit medicine last week after he ran out of essential heart pills and beta blockers.<\/p>\n Peter described his living quarters as “a cage rather than a cell”. <\/p>\n American prisoner detained by Taliban is RELEASED\u2026 but no sign of Brit couple she was held with in Afghanistan jail<\/p>\n But he added that his quarters are “VIP conditions” compared to those for women.<\/p>\n Barbie is in the women’s quarters of the prison, and has not seen her husband once since they were arrested. <\/p>\n The couple both ask every day for permission to meet but so far this has not been granted.<\/p>\n The pair are desperate to escape but Peter has begged his family not to pay the ransom, instead demanding that the Taliban apologise for detaining them.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cNo money<\/a> should be paid in hush money or hostage money, it doesn\u2019t solve anything if millions of dollars are paid.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cThis government needs to face up to the fact it has made a mistake, it has done wrong.<\/p>\n “If money is paid there is nothing to stop them arresting people again.\u201d<\/p>\n Peter and Barbie were arrested on February 1 along with their interpreter, Jaya, and a visiting Chinese-American friend, Faye Hall.<\/p>\n The group was detained after flying in a small plane from Kabul to an airstrip near their home in the central province of Bamiyan.<\/p>\n Hall was released on March 27<\/a> following a court<\/a> order. <\/p>\n Following her release the American citizen heaped praises for president Trump.<\/p>\n Hall said in a video posted by Trump on Truth Social: “I’ve never been so proud to be an American citizen. Thank you, Mr President.”<\/p>\n But her release was not such good news<\/a> for Peter, who is increasingly concerned for his elderly wife.<\/p>\n Peter’s son Jonathon broke the news to his dad last week on a call. <\/p>\n Peter said: \u201cOh no, so Mum\u2019s on her own. Oh my, oh my goodness, and they won\u2019t let me see her, that\u2019s terrible news.\u201d<\/p>\n The British couple have still not had any charges issued against them and no explanation for their arrest has been given. <\/p>\n It was previously thought that they had been arrested for reportedly teaching parenting skills to mothers<\/a>. <\/p>\n But the Taliban later claimed the arrest of a British couple in Afghanistan was due to a “misunderstanding”.<\/a> <\/p>\n The group added that they were aiming to release the Brits “as soon as possible” – but so far no progress has been made.<\/p>\n Peter and Barbie ran five schools<\/a> in Kabul, including a mother and children training school which was reportedly approved by The Taliban.<\/p>\n Unlike most foreigners, the pair remained in the country after the Taliban retook power<\/a> in August 2021. <\/p>\n According to their family, they had experienced no previous problems with the regime.<\/p>\n And Barbie even became the first woman to be recognised – with a certificate of appreciation from the Taliban regime.<\/p>\n![\"Peter](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/couple-kidnapped-taliban-afghanistan-974498751.jpg\")
