{"id":512611,"date":"2025-10-19T19:34:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T19:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/512611\/"},"modified":"2025-10-19T19:34:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-19T19:34:12","slug":"priceless-jewels-stolen-from-frances-louvre-museum-in-four-minute-heist-crime-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/512611\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Priceless\u2019 jewels stolen from France\u2019s Louvre Museum in four-minute heist | Crime News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">The world\u2019s most-visited museum will remain closed for the day for \u2018exceptional reasons\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Thieves wielding power tools have struck at the famed Louvre Museum in Paris, stealing eight items of priceless jewellery in a brazen heist that took just four minutes, according to the government.<\/p>\n<p>The thieves struck at about 9:30am (07:30 GMT) when the museum had already opened its doors to the public and entered the Galerie d\u2019Apollon (Apollo\u2019s Gallery) building, which is home to the French crown jewels, the Ministry of the Interior said Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>The group made away with eight items, while a ninth \u2013 the crown belonging to Empress Eugenie, Napoleon III\u2019s wife \u2013 was recovered nearby after it was dropped by the thieves as they fled, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond their market value, these items have priceless heritage and historical value,\u201d the ministry said, adding that no injuries were reported, either among the public or among Louvre staff or law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n<p>Culture Minister Rachida Dati said the daring heist was over in four minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came immediately, a couple of minutes after we received information of this robbery. To be completely honest, this operation lasted almost four minutes \u2013 it was very quick. We have to say that these are professionals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Louvre, the world\u2019s most-visited museum and home to Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s Mona Lisa, said on X it would remain closed for the day for \u201cexceptional reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Forensic experts arrived on the scene to collect evidence while authorities said they also planned to review CCTV footage in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Footage from earlier in the day showed chaotic scenes as police closed the Louvre\u2019s gates and nearby roads, resulting in crowds of confused tourists outside the complex.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4045080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AFP__20251019__79AX22G__v1__HighRes__FranceMuseumRobbery-1760872690.jpg\" alt=\"Tourists walk past a French police officer after the Louvre Museum was closed following a robbery, in Paris on October 19, 2025\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Tourists walk past a police officer after the museum was closed due to the robbery [Dimitar Dilkoff\/AFP]<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to France Inter radio, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said \u201cjewels of inestimable value\u201d were stolen in what he described as a \u201cmajor robbery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said the thieves used a basket lift to reach the museum\u2019s windows before cutting the panes \u201cwith a disc cutter\u201d to enter the targeted gallery, before escaping on motorbikes.<\/p>\n<p>French daily Le Parisien reported that the thieves entered the museum, housed in a former palace, via the facade facing the Seine, where construction work is under way.<\/p>\n<p>The Louvre has a long history of thefts, most famously in 1911, when the Mona Lisa was stolen by a former worker. It was recovered two years later in Florence, Italy.<\/p>\n<p>In 1983, two Renaissance-era pieces of armour were stolen from the Louvre and were recovered nearly four decades later.<\/p>\n<p>Several French museums have recently been targeted.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, thieves broke into Paris\u2019s Natural History Museum, making off with gold samples worth 600,000 euros ($700,000). They used an angle grinder and a blow torch to steal the native gold, a metal alloy containing gold and silver in their natural unrefined form.<\/p>\n<p>In November last year, four thieves stole snuffboxes and other precious artifacts from another Paris museum in broad daylight, breaking into a display case with axes and baseball bats.
