{"id":513353,"date":"2025-10-20T02:50:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T02:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/513353\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T02:50:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T02:50:17","slug":"jo-wilfried-tsonga-responds-to-john-mcenroes-claim-that-carlos-alcaraz-is-better-than-the-big-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/513353\/","title":{"rendered":"Jo-Wilfried Tsonga\u00a0responds to John McEnroe\u2019s claim that Carlos Alcaraz is better than the big three"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   <a class=\"fw\" href=\"https:\/\/profile.google.com\/cp\/Cg0vZy8xMXlnMTNoeXE4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"28\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grv-media\/img\/google-discover.svg\" alt=\"\"\/> Follow us on Google Discover <\/a>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Former Grand Slam finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has responded to the strong claim John McEnroe made about Carlos Alcaraz.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/atp-player-who-john-mcenroe-predicted-could-become-a-major-champion-admits-he-will-never-return-to-the-top-20-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McEnroe is not afraid to make a bold claim<\/a>, and that was no different when he made comments about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alcaraz<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>For most of the 21st century, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP Tour<\/a> has been dominated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/john-isner-picks-who-made-him-the-most-nervous-the-first-time-he-played-roger-federer-rafael-nadal-and-novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">big three of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With two of those three players now retired, Alcaraz and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jannik Sinner<\/a> have taken the reins, leading to big predictions being made about both players.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-2238035392-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Carlos Alcaraz of Spain celebrates winning against Casper Ruud of Norway during the Singles Semi-Final on day six of Kinoshita Group Japan Open at Ariake Colosseum.\" \/>Photo by Koji Watanabe\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>When speaking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Open<\/a> earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/john-mcenroe-says-if-he-believes-carlos-alcaraz-is-more-talented-than-roger-federer-and-rafael-nadal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McEnroe compared Alcaraz to the big three<\/a>, claiming that he was the most talented player he has ever seen at this age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis guy Carlos Alcaraz at 21 or 22 is the most talented kid I have ever seen on the tennis court,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/john-mcenroe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McEnroe<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/roger-federer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roger Federer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/rafael-nadal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nadal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Djokovic<\/a> who I have great respect for. I idolised Rod Laver, I played Pete Sampras, this guy is astoundingly good when he is on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the quickest guys who has ever been on the court, incredible personality, the attitude is amazing. He has got every shot in the book. Everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"666\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-1426557119-1-1024x666.jpg\" alt=\"Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the Laver Cup.\" class=\"wp-image-92632\" \/>Photo by Julian Finney\/Getty Images for Laver Cup<\/p>\n<p>Someone who knows what it is like to play against Djokovic, Nadal and Federer on multiple occasions is Tsonga, and he was asked about McEnroe\u2019s comments on a podcast episode for Univers Tennis.<\/p>\n<p>While Tsonga accepted that Alcaraz is \u2018a complete player\u2019, he suggested that the level of competition on the ATP Tour was higher before he retired in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s true that he\u2019s developing more. He\u2019s a really complete player,\u201d Tsonga said about Alcaraz. \u201cHe is really complete. Afterwards, is he stronger than those players today? Mentally, physically, well we don\u2019t really know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I would have liked to see is Alcaraz win Roland Garros, but by beating [Juan Martin] Del Potro in the third round, [Andy] Murray in the fourth round, Djokovic in the quarterfinals, Federer in the semifinals and Nadal in the final.
