Maria McAneny scorned a glorious chance in added time when she sclaffed an effort wide.

In truth, by that stage City ought to have been out of sight.

Celtic goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers denied City with two impressive second-half stops with Sadiku’s side left to rue another big game where a result has eluded them.

“I do not know if there is a mental block,” said Sadiku. “I feel right now that we are in a situation where teams are investing strongly and you can see how tight it is every season.

“Teams are getting better and better and we need to push in the same direction as well.

“It is not about a having fear factor but the fact that other teams are investing really well.

“We had a chance to level the game through Maria at the end but I don’t think that we really deserved to take anything from the game.”

Leanne Ross’ side are now five points clear of second-placed Hibs at the top of the table.

Rangers, Celtic and Hearts are all level on points, six behind City.

Ross, though, was inevitably reluctant to draw too much from the commanding cushion that they have at the top.

“It is an impressive start but that is all it is,” said Ross.

“It did feel like a big win this afternoon on the back of what has been a big week for us. But it is about keeping the momentum going.

“Going into the international break at the top of the table is a good place to be but there is a lot of work still to be done and we know that when we come back that we are straight back into an intense run of games.

“But we have played everyone now once and I think we have seen that resilience and character that we have in this side.”

Maatta netted just before the break before Evans doubled City’s lead with an arching effort that looped well beyond the reach of Rodgers and into the back of the net.

It is a win that preserves City’s unbeaten start to the season – and is all the more impressive given their 6-5 aggregate European win last Wednesday night.

Elsewhere, Rangers battered Hamilton Accies 11-0. Accies boss Bobby Watson had said that he would do a Jose Mourinho-style knee slide across the Ibrox turf if his side were successful in taking something from the game. There was never any danger of that.

Hibs beat Motherwell 5-0 to move back up to second while Hearts kept up the pressure with a 5-1 win over Aberdeen.

 Montrose beat Partick Thistle 2-0.

Irish internationalist Saoirse Noonan pulled a goal back for the host with just under ten minutes of regulation…

[7826
748,918,4884,712,16,15
0":"post-513436","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-glasgow","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-glasgow","10":"tag-great-britain","11":"tag-scotland","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
