The theft of royal jewelry
\nfrom Paris\u2019s landmark Louvre Museum revealed serious security flaws and damaged
\nthe country\u2019s global image, France\u2019s Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin acknowledged
\non Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is certain is that we
\nhave failed,\u201d Darmanin told France Inter radio, pointing out that thieves were
\nable to park a mechanical lift in central Paris, scale it within minutes, and
\nsteal priceless artifacts undeterred.<\/p>\n
Newly appointed Interior
\nMinister Laurent Nunez also weighed in, calling museum security across France a
\n\u201cmajor weak point.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Louvre, which was set to
\nreopen at 9:00 a.m. Monday, remained closed as police widened their search for
\nsuspects who stole eight 19th-century royal jewels from the Apollo Gallery
\nearly Sunday.<\/p>\n
A source close to the
\ninvestigation, cited by Agence France-Presse, said the thieves arrived just
\nafter opening, used an extendable ladder to access a window, cut through the
\nglass, and smashed display cases with power tools in a heist lasting only seven
\nminutes.<\/p>\n
Authorities suspect a
\nprofessional, possibly international, crew, with 60 investigators assigned to
\nthe case and a visitor-filmed video\u2014now circulating in French media\u2014capturing
\npart of the break-in.<\/p>\n
Among the stolen pieces were
\nan emerald-and-diamond necklace gifted by Napoleon to his wife Empress Marie
\nLouise, a diamond-encrusted diadem owned by Empress Eug\u00e9nie, and a necklace
\nonce belonging to Queen Marie-Amelie, the last queen of France, containing 631
\ndiamonds and eight sapphires.<\/p>\n
One piece\u2014the crown of Empress
\nEug\u00e9nie\u2014was reportedly dropped and damaged during the thieves’ escape, as
\nmuseum staff intervened and forced the group to abandon tools and equipment,
\naccording to the Ministry of Culture.<\/p>\n
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau
\nconfirmed investigators are pursuing two main leads: either the heist was
\ncommissioned by a private collector or tied to an international
\nmoney-laundering operation.<\/p>\n
This marks the Louvre\u2019s first
\nmajor theft since 1998, when a Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot painting vanished
