{"id":514671,"date":"2025-10-20T15:13:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T15:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/514671\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T15:13:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T15:13:13","slug":"former-wimbledon-champion-has-to-retire-due-to-injury-again-as-she-suffers-another-setback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/514671\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Wimbledon champion has to retire due to injury again as she suffers another setback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   <a class=\"fw\" href=\"https:\/\/profile.google.com\/cp\/Cg0vZy8xMXlnMTNoeXE4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"28\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grv-media\/img\/google-discover.svg\" alt=\"\"\/> Follow us on Google Discover <\/a>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pan Pacific Open is underway in Tokyo with WTA stars looking for a strong finish to the Asian swing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On day one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WTA<\/a> 500 event in the Japanese capital, British star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/katie-boulter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie Boulter<\/a> saw her tournament come to an abrupt end following a straight-sets defeat to Eva Lys. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, former Australian Open quarterfinalist Anna Kalinskaya kicked her run off with a dominant victory over Suzan Lamens, winning 6-3, 6-1. <\/p>\n<p>For one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WTA<\/a> star, however, their campaign at the Pan Pacific Open has ended early in heartbreak. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-2242130302-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Anna Kalinskaya reacts at the 2025 Pan Pacific Open.\" \/>Photo by Koji Watanabe\/Getty ImagesMarketa Vondrousova retires due to injury at the Pan Pacific Open<\/p>\n<p>In yet another setback, 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova was forced to retire due to injury during her opening-round match against Karolina Muchova in Tokyo. <\/p>\n<p>After losing the first set to her Czech compatriot 6-2, Vondrousova conceded the first game in the second set, before calling a halt to the contest. <\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old has dealt with a number of injury issues in the past, particularly with her left shoulder, for which she underwent surgery in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>Vondrousova returned to tour-level action at the start of 2025 in Adelaide, but took more time out after the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-2240949752-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Ningbo Open -
