However, extreme toothache days later led to an emergency hospital visit and the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Following numerous relapses and months of attempted treatments throughout 2024, including intensive chemotherapy, in December 2024, she underwent a stem cell transplant and was declared cancer-free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, just a week into March this year, Olivia received the devastating news that the leukaemia had returned, and she only had months left to live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was then she says a doctor asked her about &#8216;about taking a flight&#8217; &#8211; suggesting she should go to Dignitas, in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But the hair salon owner from Blackpool has now completed a 20-mile walk around Fairhaven Lake on March 16 to raise funds for clinical research at King&#8217;s College Hospital &#8211; and says she has the intention of joining a new clinical trial against the disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She said she hopes that any donations will enhance research into AML, a particularly aggressive form of cancer which, she said, hasn&#8217;t seen any &#8220;solid advancements&#8221; in treatment for half a century. <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"http:\/\/gofundme.com\/f\/kings-college-hospital-clinical-research-department\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Olivia&#039;s fundraiser remains open, and can be found hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Olivia&#8217;s fundraiser remains open, and can be found here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I always thought that relapse would be a real possibility, but obviously, I just didn&#8217;t expect it to be so soon,&#8221; Olivia, who used to enjoy 100-mile bike rides and 15-mile runs on a typical weekend before her diagnosis, told PA Real Life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;All I really miss now is going to work and training. That&#8217;s all I want \u2013 just my normal day and my normal routine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;If you could have one day, it might sound odd to some people, but I would just love to take the dog for a run and go to work, more than anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Found to have cancer two days after &#8216;long Covid&#8217; diagnosis<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Olivia started noticing something &#8220;wasn&#8217;t quite correct&#8221; in August 2023 while competing in the Half Ironman World Championship in Lahti, Finland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The two-mile swim and 56-mile cycle went smoothly, she said, but the 13-mile run to the finish line &#8220;quickly turned into a &#8216;let&#8217;s just get round this'&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I just wasn&#8217;t able to push as hard as I normally would have been able to,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;But I didn&#8217;t feel unwell day to day, so I was just pushing it to the back of my mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Olivia went to a private doctor in November 2023 but was told it was &#8220;very likely to be long Covid&#8221; and she should &#8220;expect to feel like this for some time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Two days later, she was admitted to Blackpool A&amp;E with extreme toothache and sepsis and was told soon after she had an aggressive form of acute myeloid leukaemia that responds poorly to treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It was a total shock,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I&#8217;m not saying I was the healthiest person in the world, but I was quite healthy \u2013 I didn&#8217;t have a lifestyle that was indicative of cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Olivia began a regime of chemotherapy designed to &#8220;completely empty&#8221; her bone marrow to see whether the cancerous cells grew back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This procedure stripped away her immune system, leaving her extremely vulnerable to infection and unable to leave hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I went to hospital on November 7 and I didn&#8217;t leave until <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/christmas\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Christmas<\/a> Eve,&#8221; Olivia recalled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2_Olivia-with-her-mum-Susan-after-her-fourth-round-of-chemotherapy-at-UCLH-CollectPA-Real-Life.jpg\" alt=\"Olivia lying on a couch with her mum. She is connected to medical devices\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Olivia with her mum, Susan, after her fourth round of chemotherapy<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Following two rounds of chemo with varying degrees of success, Olivia&#8217;s third treatment in April 2024 largely succeeded in eradicating her leukaemia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But just before she was due to have a stem cell transplant to replace her bone marrow, a pre-surgery appointment was moved unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I thought that seemed strange, so I went down to the hospital and asked to speak to my consultant,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1_Olivia-with-her-four-year-old-French-Bulldog-Koji-CollectPA-Real-Life.jpg\" alt=\"Olivia with long hair next to her grey and white french bulldog\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Olivia Knowles, 33, from Blackpool, Lancashire<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It became a very weird scenario in which he wouldn&#8217;t come on the phone to speak to my nurse specialist, or me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I ended up speaking to him the day after, and obviously I&#8217;d relapsed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With AML, Olivia explained: &#8220;Even if there&#8217;s a speck of it left, it just regrows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;And what regrows is basically the resistant cells, the ones that have evaded and resisted the previous chemo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Have you ever thought about taking a flight?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Olivia says her consultant at Blackpool Victoria Hospital gave her three options \u2013 try to get a transplant despite her relapse, join a clinical trial, or &#8220;do nothing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Olivia said a consultant offering a second opinion at another hospital asked her: &#8220;Have you ever thought about taking a flight?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This confused her because AML patients are advised to avoid &#8220;anywhere where the air is recirculated&#8221;, such as on planes, but &#8220;then the penny dropped, and I realised he&#8217;d suggested going to Dignitas (the Swiss assisted dying clinic)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2_Olivia-with-her-best-friends-Natasha-and-Amy-CollectPA-Real-Life.jpg\" alt=\"Olivia, dressed in a white shirt, hugging her two best friends\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Olivia (centre) with her best friends, Natasha and Amy <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In November 2024, after various unsuccessful trials, Olivia was given a novel Car-T treatment \u2013 immunotherapy which genetically modifies a patient&#8217;s T-cells to attack cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The treatment at King&#8217;s College Hospital in London was followed by a stem cell transplant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The initial bone marrow findings were excellent,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;There were no signs of disease. It was a really positive result at first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I was feeling probably the best I&#8217;d felt for quite some time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2_Olivia-with-her-French-Bulldog-Koji-after-her-second-round-of-chemo-CollectPA-Real-Life.jpg\" alt=\"Olivia in a black jumper with her grey and white French Bulldog\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Olivia with her French Bulldog, Koji, after her second round of chemo<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In March 2025, Olivia was readmitted with gut issues, a common side effect of stem cell transplants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She said: &#8220;I&#8217;d been in for blood literally one week before. The blood work had been very good, no reason for concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;One week later, I showed active disease.
