PASSENGERS flying from Scotland\u2019s biggest airports could see a huge shake-up to their flights. <\/p>\n

Planes departing from Glasgow<\/a> and Edinburgh<\/a> could travel on new flight paths designed to reduce noise and cut emissions.<\/p>\n

The Airspace Change Organising Group revealed that modern planes are still using \u201coutdated routes\u201d from 70 years ago. <\/p>\n

This often means flying further and longer than needed based on systems introduced in the 1950s.<\/p>\n

According to air traffic<\/a> service Nats, the change could reduce carbon emissions by 18,000 tonnes \u2013 the same amount of energy used by 5,000 homes.<\/p>\n

Head of operations development Lee Boulton told BBC News<\/a>: \u201cWith demand expected to rise over the next decade, airspace modernisation will help ensure the network can meet future needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s understood that respective airports<\/a> are responsible for the modernisation of paths below 7,000ft.<\/p>\n

Several consultations will take place between travel<\/a> hubs, communities, local businesses and politicians. <\/p>\n

Edinburgh Airport chief Gordon Dewar said: \u201cThe modernisation of our skies has been needed for some time, and the proposals we\u2019re presenting have been shaped through our engagement and discussion with our local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Beveridge, managing director of Glasgow Airport, added: \u201cOur proposals aim to reduce the total adverse effects of noise from aircraft, improve capacity and minimise delays, and lower emissions per flight<\/a> through more direct routing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, a popular airline was forced to stop flights<\/a> after a \u2018freak\u2019 maintenance issue.<\/p>\n

Thousands of passengers have had their flights\u00a0cancelled or delayed<\/a>\u00a0due to an unusual safety problem.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Finnair<\/a>, the issue that caused the cancellation was aircraft seat covers being cleaned incorrectly.<\/p>\n

A statement from the airline revealed that the \u201cseat cover cleaning method (water washing) on fire protection has not been properly verified\u201d.<\/p>\n

It continued to add that safety is its \u201ctop priority\u201d and it would be acting on the \u201cmanufacturers\u2019 maintenance instructions as well as the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities\u201d.<\/p>\n

The airline said that it would make daily aircraft type changes to minimise the number of cancellations, but that this would likely \u201clead to overbookings\u201d.<\/p>\n

It added that \u201cseveral flights between 13 and 17 October 2025\u201d had been cancelled and it would be likely that there would be more \u201cflight cancellations, delays or changes in the operating airline\u201d.<\/p>\n
