{"id":515299,"date":"2025-10-20T21:04:23","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T21:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/515299\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T21:04:23","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T21:04:23","slug":"uks-king-charles-visits-site-of-yom-kippur-synagogue-attack-in-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/515299\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s King Charles visits site of Yom Kippur synagogue attack in Manchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (Reuters) \u2014 The UK\u2019s King Charles III visited the synagogue in Manchester on Monday where two Jewish worshipers were killed earlier this month during an attack by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/manchester-synagogue-attacker-pledged-allegiance-to-isis-in-call-during-rampage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">man who told police<\/a> he was acting for Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p>Charles, 76, traveled to the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in the Crumpsall district of Manchester to show support to those who had been affected by the attack, and to the wider Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>Charles was seen being shown floral tributes left at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation by Rabbi Daniel Walker. (Chris Jackson \/ POOL \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Two men, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/manchester-synagogue-attack-victims-named-as-adrian-daulby-53-and-melvin-cravitz-66\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were killed<\/a>\u00a0in the incident which took place during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.<\/p>\n<p>After the attack, Charles said he was \u201cdeeply shocked and saddened,\u201d and during his visit to the synagogue he met some of those who had been inside when it took place.<\/p>\n<p>Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/2-killed-3-seriously-injured-in-yom-kippur-attack-at-uk-synagogue-assailant-shot-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drove a car into<\/a> pedestrians outside the synagogue earlier this month and attacked people with a knife before being shot dead by armed police.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3654859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AP25275444382419-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Members of the Jewish community comfort each other near the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, in Crumpsall, Manchester, England, October 2, 2025. Jews suffered\u00a0the highest rate\u00a0of religious hate crimes in England and Wales in the year to March, interior ministry data showed on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, three British right-wing extremists\u00a0were jailed\u00a0after they were convicted of planning to carry out an attack at synagogues or mosques.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s visit was also the king\u2019s first official engagement since his younger brother Prince Andrew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/one-epstein-scandal-too-many-forces-uk-monarchy-to-sideline-prince-andrew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> on Friday that he was giving up his titles and honors including being known as the Duke of York.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3669626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AFP__20251020__79E98Z6__v1__HighRes__BritainRoyalsCrimeReligionPolice-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s King Charles III meets members of the community during a visit to Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Crumpsall, north Manchester, on October 20, 2025.
