{"id":517660,"date":"2025-10-21T18:50:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T18:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/517660\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T18:50:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T18:50:11","slug":"king-charles-used-winston-churchills-playbook-as-he-campaigned-for-camilla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/517660\/","title":{"rendered":"King Charles Used Winston Churchill&#8217;s Playbook as He Campaigned for Camilla"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> NEED TO KNOW<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>King Charles used the &#8220;long-game&#8221; approach espoused in a different era by renowned Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill when he was bidding to get the then Camilla Parker Bowles accepted<\/li>\n<li>The suggestion comes from royal biographer Andrew Morton, whose book Winston and the Windsors is out on Oct. 21<\/li>\n<li>Morton is famous for his groundbreaking biography of the late Princess Diana, Diana: Her True Story<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> When the future <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/prince-charles\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Charles<\/a> wanted to make the then-<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/person\/queen-camilla\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camilla Parker Bowles<\/a> his wife, he relied on a tried-and-tested royal formula: play the long game, and gradually, people will be accustomed to the change.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> He told courtiers that Camilla was a permanent non-negotiable part of his life, and they set about gradually making her more acceptable to the British people \u2014 firstly by getting a skeptical media, which had been so pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/princess-diana\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princess Diana<\/a>, onside, and then easing her into the public consciousness. It took several years, but the couple <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/all-about-king-charles-queen-camilla-wedding-8378803\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was married in 2005<\/a>, eight years after Diana\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/royals\/death-of-princess-diana-19-years-ago-today\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sudden death in Paris<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The long game was something that Churchill would have advised, too, especially concerning his onetime friend King Edward VIII.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/how-winston-churchill-crucial-help-young-queen-elizabeth-andrew-morton-exclusive-11831693\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biographer Andrew Morton<\/a> tells PEOPLE, \u201cChurchill always felt Edward VIII would find what he called a \u2018pretty cat\u2019 and settle down. His policy for Edward VIII was just to play for time, to just get through the coronation and gradually introduce the object of your desire to the public in a gradual way through staged photographs,&#8221; Morton says.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> However, the monarch didn\u2019t want to wait to make twice-divorced Wallis Simpson his wife and had to abdicate the throne after 326 days, before he even had a coronation.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Churchill\u2019s place alongside the royal family is explored in Morton\u2019s new book,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Winston-Windsors-Historical-Biography-Relationship\/dp\/1335250999\" data-component=\"amazon\" data-source=\"affiliate\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Winston and the Windsors<\/a>, out Oct. 21.\u00a0Morton \u2014 famous for his Diana: Her True Story, which (with her cooperation) shed light on the late royal&#8217;s unhappy marriage \u2014 says the tactic espoused by Churchill for another king was\u00a0\u201cexactly how Prince Charles did it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> He adds, \u201cIn 1992, when Charles and Diana separated, Prime Minister John Major told the House of Commons there were no plans for them to divorce. It was going to be queen consort and now it&#8217;s Queen, and there hasn&#8217;t been rioting in the streets.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Morton adds, \u201cThe point about Churchill is that he was not a moralizer. He didn&#8217;t look in the rearview mirror. He had a long, sparky relationship with George V. His friendship with Edward VIII nearly cost him his career, and a bromance with George VI,&#8221; he says. \u201cAnd he was in love, it\u2019s fair to say, with the late Queen.
