{"id":518361,"date":"2025-10-22T01:04:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T01:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/518361\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T01:04:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T01:04:12","slug":"jd-vance-travels-to-israel-to-save-trumps-israel-hamas-peace-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/518361\/","title":{"rendered":"JD Vance travels to Israel to save Trump&#8217;s Israel-Hamas peace deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JD Vance, Trump&#8217;s top messenger, is expected to rein in actions by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that could have irreversible consequences.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/86787402007-20251012-t-125537-z-1713913401-rc-2-aaharr-9-ms-rtrmadp-3-israelpalestiniansgaza.JPG\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Israel strikes Gaza, accuses Hamas of attacking Israeli troops<\/p>\n<p>Israeli officials said its military carried out strikes in southern Gaza after Hamas militants allegedly fired on Israeli soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2012 President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" data-autotag=\"26f031d1-9924-4f10-b4e6-019d076113d5\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s top messenger, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/10\/18\/jd-vance-visit-israel-gaza-peace-push\/86771142007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JD Vance, is traveling to Israe<\/a>l and is expected to try and rein in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while seeking to prevent the collapse of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/29\/trump-netanyahu-plan-end-gaza-war\/86415717007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">week-old peace deal<\/a> hailed as a coup for the United States in ending a brutal two year war.<\/p>\n<p>But the vice president will land in fraught territory as the deal brokered by the White House hangs in the balance. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/10\/14\/hamas-hostages-remains-israel-threatens-to-cut-aid\/86695301007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first part of the ceasefire<\/a> was confined to the release of living hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and flowing in of aid. Vance faces the biggest sticking point of the rest of the plan: Hamas\u2019 disarmament and Israel\u2019s full withdrawal of troops from the enclave.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/10\/israel-hamas-gaza-ceasefire-trump-netanyahu\/86619890007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-stakes gamble<\/a> for the vice president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/08\/vp-vance-trump-maga-enforcer\/80705672007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/08\/vp-vance-trump-maga-enforcer\/80705672007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with limited<\/a> foreign policy experience. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/28\/jd-vance-trump-midterm-messenger-vp-tax-law\/85854889007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/28\/jd-vance-trump-midterm-messenger-vp-tax-law\/85854889007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vance aims to succeed<\/a> in the latest chapter of a conflict that has engulfed previous American administrations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At minimum, Vance, with the help of other Trump envoys, must convince Netanyahu\u2019s government to show restraint in responding to Hamas\u2019 provocations and ensure that humanitarian assistance makes it into Gaza, former U.S. officials say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/21\/vance-israel-hamas-ceasefire\/86814007007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;This is not the end.&#8217; Vance seeks to salvage shaky Hamas ceasefire in whirlwind Israel trip<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As questions about the future of Gaza\u2019s governance and policing remain \u2013 including Israel\u2019s own safety concerns \u2013 Vance is also under pressure to define ambitious points of Trump\u2019s peace plan.<\/p>\n<p>Among them which countries will participate in the U.S.-backed Arab stabilization force that will provide support to vetted police after Hamas disarms and who will sit on the Palestinian committee that oversees Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there&#8217;s anything short of that, and they&#8217;re going to have some explaining to do,\u201d former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/10\/19\/israel-accuses-hamas-of-attacks-and-ceasefire-violation-strikes-gaza\/86787017007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A flare-up in fighting<\/a> threatened to invalidate the agreement after Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza in retaliation for a Hamas assault that it said killed two soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute resulted in the temporary suspension on Oct. 19 in the delivery of humanitarian aid. Israel\u2019s military said it began renewed enforcement of the ceasefire later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Trump said Hamas had been \u201cquite rambunctious\u201d but the ceasefire remained in place.<\/p>\n<p>Vance acknowledged the high-wire act on the eve of his anticipated visit, telling reporters that keeping the deal intact would be complicated and the ceasefire would be marked by fits and starts. The ceasefire will have to be monitored, he said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamas is going to fire on Israel. Israel\u2019s going to have to respond, of course. There are going to be moments where you have people within Gaza that you\u2019re not quite sure what they\u2019re actually doing,\u201d Vance said. \u201cBut we think it has the best chance for sustainable peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vice president<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/05\/17\/vice-president-jd-vance-visibility-outspoken\/83630581007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/05\/17\/vice-president-jd-vance-visibility-outspoken\/83630581007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> has actively sought to increase<\/a> his international exposure since entering office, making trips to Germany, Greenland, India, the U.K. and the Vatican this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/10\/19\/israel-accuses-hamas-of-attacks-and-ceasefire-violation-strikes-gaza\/86787017007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel launches strikes in Gaza after accusing Hamas of violating ceasefire<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vance will have to do more than maintain the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. To succeed in his foray into negotiations on the international stage, Vance has to deliver where Trump has avoided going into detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShowing evidence that progress is being made on the second phase begins is extremely important for the survivability of the plan,\u201d said Khalil Shikaki, director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah.<\/p>\n<p>The administration has to show that its plan did more than end the war and consolidate Hamas&#8217; control over Gaza, said Shikaki, a senior fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the administration must convey that this is a short phase to be followed by others, including the creation of the apolitical committee of Palestinians and international experts that the Trump-led \u201cboard of peace\u201d is supposed to supervise under the president\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas has not agreed to back away from the governance of Gaza, as Trump\u2019s plan dictates, stimulating concern about the administration\u2019s ability to pull off the second phase.<\/p>\n<p>Getting Hamas to disarm will require significant pressure, said Jonathan Schanzer, executive director at Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the author of multiple books on Hamas and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And it will require the United States to press Turkey and Qatar to use their leverage with Hamas \u2012 two allies that acted as guarantors in negotiations for the militant group.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Vance is expected to lean heavily on Netanyahu to respond less aggressively with the Israeli military to alleged ceasefire violations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe message is quite simple: please don&#8217;t respond with the full force of the IDF. We are still working on keeping the ceasefire intact. And basically that means asking the Israelis to do the United States a solid,\u201d Schanzer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vance\u2019s visit to Israel ratchets up the level of involvement from the Trump administration in talks at a crucial moment, and as the president turns his attention to resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and a trade dispute with China.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is expected to travel to Asia this month and says he\u2019ll meet with Russian President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/world\/vladimir-putin\/\" data-autotag=\"298acb1c-8b19-4b8a-a800-721cc3639857\" rel=\"noopener\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> in the coming weeks in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations in the Middle East have been led by Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president\u2019s son-in-law and the author of his first-term Middle East peace plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/29\/trump-netanyahu-plan-end-gaza-war\/86415717007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/29\/trump-netanyahu-plan-end-gaza-war\/86415717007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> notionally agreed to<\/a> the 20-point plan during a White House visit at the end of September. The deal received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/09\/israeli-government-trump-plan-hostage-release\/86599653007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/09\/israeli-government-trump-plan-hostage-release\/86599653007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Israeli government backing <\/a>after Witkoff and Kushner pressed Netanyahu\u2019s cabinet to accept it during a presentation earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>It now falls to Vance, who has been increasing his presence on the world stage, to convince Israeli officials to move on to the next phase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s going to require significant U.S. engagement for this to succeed,\u201d said Kurtzer, a former ambassador to Israel and Egypt who represented the U.S. in talks between Israel and the Palestinians in a previous administration. \u201cIt will not happen on its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\">Francesca Chambers is a White House Correspondent for USA TODAY.
