A brain haemorrhage led to a stroke that left her completely dependent on others. After weeks in hospital, she returned home using a wheelchair, then progressed to a Zimmer frame, crutches, and eventually walking sticks. Through it all, one goal kept her going: to run again.

Understanding and support

It was then she discovered MAC—Midlothian Council’s Sport & Leisure’s physical activity referral programme. “MAC has been my lifesaver,” Dorothy says. “From the start, they understood me, encouraged me, and supported me.”

Determined

With Paige and Michael’s guidance, Dorothy gradually regained strength, independence, and confidence. Her husband was welcomed into the process, and together they navigated the challenges of altered mobility. Over time, Dorothy became more self-sufficient, and her determination never wavered.

A fantastic day

Earlier this year, Dorothy achieved her dream: running the Glasgow half marathon with Paige and Michael. “They’ve gone above and beyond,” she says. “What a fantastic day—it meant everything.”

Supportive community

Dorothy also found a new community at MAC, whom she describes: “A family of courageous people overcoming major physical and mental challenges. We share stories, support each other, and have plenty of good banter!”

An inspiration

David West, Midlothian Council Wellbeing Officer, praised Dorothy’s achievement. He said: “What a fantastic accomplishment. Dorothy’s motivation to overcome barriers is an inspiration to us all. Huge thanks to Paige and Michael for guiding and supporting her on this journey.”

About MAC

Midlothian Active Choices is a physical activity referral programme designed to help people become more active through supported activities tailored to individual needs.

In the photograph

Dorothy is in the middle and Paige Hunter is front left and Michael Tetlow is second from the right.

Midlothian Active Choices (MAC), Midlothian Council’s physical activity referral programme, has helped stroke survivor Dorothy Hansen achieve what…

[8816
748,51,5554,5034,932,26107,1102,2266,728,4884,6333,897,756,26108,26113,131662,12,12717,10688,8908,15642,712,3593,131663,1263,16,15
0":"post-518484","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-edinburgh","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-business","10":"tag-community","11":"tag-council","12":"tag-council-tax","13":"tag-councillor","14":"tag-edinburgh","15":"tag-education","16":"tag-environment","17":"tag-great-britain","18":"tag-housing","19":"tag-jobs","20":"tag-learning","21":"tag-leisure","22":"tag-library","23":"tag-midlothian","24":"tag-news","25":"tag-planning","26":"tag-recycling","27":"tag-rubbish","28":"tag-school","29":"tag-scotland","30":"tag-social-care","31":"tag-trading-licences","32":"tag-transport","33":"tag-uk","34":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
