This is because they will be lowered over 15 years, following the trade deal coming into effect at the start of 2021. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen combined with the fact that we typically export the more premium \u2014 and therefore expensive \u2014 cheeses to Japan, the impact is even higher,\u201d said Hyde. \u201cAll this means that British cheeses will feel relatively expensive to Japanese consumers compared to similar products they\u2019re shopping for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luxury cheeses<\/p>\n<p>British cheese is a luxury good in Japan. Yet, even Fortnum &amp; Mason doesn\u2019t display its pots of Stilton and other British cheese alongside the tea, scones, clotted cream, jam, preserves and biscuits on its stand in the bustling food hall of Japan\u2019s legendary Mitsukoshi department store. <\/p>\n<p>Hidden away on the store\u2019s third basement level at the &#8220;Cheese on the Table&#8221; stall, you can find Red Cheddar (\u00a5972, \u00a34.78), Stilton (\u00a51,080, \u00a35.31), and Clotted cream (\u00a52,376, \u00a311.70) alongside other European varieties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For ordinary Japanese people, \u201cthe image of the production of the cheese is France, Italy, not Britain,\u201d said a Japanese official, noting the U.K.\u2019s best-known export is Scotch whisky. \u201cIn this sense, I think the promotion for this British cheese would be necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s ambition among U.K. food and drink manufacturers to increase their trading with markets outside the EU, like Japan,\u201d said Hyde. \u201cWe want that ambition to be met with action from government, by doing more to promote U.K. food and drink abroad, alongside gaining tariff reductions to these nations.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Japanese tariffs on multiple British cheeses remain obstructively high, at 25, 14, and 18.6 percent.
