TV icon Bryant Gumbel is being treated in a New York hospital after suffering a reported ‘medical emergency.’<\/p>\n

The 77-year-old won a host of awards during a remarkable career that spanned more than 50 years and included over a decade as host of the Today show.<\/p>\n

Gumbel was first hired by NBC in 1975 to co-host its NFL pregame show every Sunday. He later worked on the network’s coverage of baseball, college football, golf and the Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But on Tuesday, TMZ reported<\/a>\u00a0that Gumbel had to be rushed from his Manhattan apartment block to the hospital on Monday night.<\/p>\n

Precise details of what happened are unclear but a family member told TMZ that the TV Hall of Famer is ‘okay.’<\/p>\n

It is claimed the 77-year-old was put on a gurney by first responders as they helped him out of his apartment building.<\/p>\n

According to TMZ, Gumbel remains in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0This ‘medical emergency’ comes not long after the death of his older brother,\u00a0Greg, who passed away last year aged 78.<\/p>\n

Gumbel\u00a0became the first Black host of the Today show when he teamed up with Jane Pauley in 1982.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He went on to host Today for 15 years, while also leading NBC’s coverage of the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and the PGA Tour in 1990.<\/p>\n

Gumbel had his own show on HBO for 29 seasons.\u00a0Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel was an\u00a0investigative series that ran until 2023 and won\u00a037 Sports Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n

He was later inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame after\u00a052 years on the small screen.<\/p>\n

‘I think that’s enough for any person,’ Gumbel previously told Rich Eisen. ‘If I never look into a television camera again, that’s okay by me.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
