You cannot blame Manchester United fans for getting ahead of themselves with Senne Lammens.<\/p>\n
The goalkeeper has looked extremely assured in his opening two matches for the club, and after more than two seasons of watching Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir commit costly errors, a young keeper bringing security and confidence to the backline deserves to be recognised.<\/p>\n
In truth, Lammens<\/a> enjoyed a much quieter afternoon than he would have been expecting at the home of the Premier League champions at Anfield on Sunday, with the woodwork forced into action almost as many times as the Belgian shot-stopper. But when he was called upon he didn’t put a foot wrong.<\/p>\n His finest save of the afternoon came in the first half, as Ibrahima Konate’s through ball from in his own half cut through the United<\/a> backline to release Alexander Isak. The Swede looked nailed on to level the scores, only for Lammens to stand tall and repel his low, driven effort.<\/p>\n While the save was worthy of the highlights reel, United cannot bury their heads in the sand and ignore the way the chance was created.<\/p>\n With Konate more than 50 yards away from the United goal, had Lammens been on the front foot he would have had plenty of time to anticipate the pass and sweep up the danger. Instead, the former Royal Antwerp goalkeeper stayed rooted to his line, affording Isak the chance to make it 1-1.<\/p>\n It’s by no means a criticism of Lammens. ‘Sweeper keeper’ has become a staple in the lexicon of every football hipster in recent years, but there’s more than one way to play the position.<\/p>\n With United securing a famous victory and Liverpool hitting the woodwork no fewer than four times at Anfield on Sunday, Lammens’ fine denial of Isak has perhaps been forgotten by some.
