The landlord of a problem property which had ‘squatters living in a van at the front’ in a prestigious area of Birmingham<\/a> has been ordered to carry out improvements.<\/p>\n

Locals had repeatedly complained about the squalid state of the house on Barnsley Road in a conservation area of Edgbaston<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rubbish was said to have been piled high and people reportedly living in a vehicle within the perimeter.<\/p>\n

Coun Marcus Bernasconi said the property was licensed and had been served a community protection warning – a formal notice issued by police or other authorities to address yob behaviour – in the last 48 hours.<\/p>\n

Under the conditions, the landlord must remove the waste, carry out repairs and secure the boundary.<\/p>\n

Coun Bernasconi said he had dealt with many complaints about the build-up of rubbish and the poor management of the property.<\/p>\n

“At one point there were people squatting in a van or car within the perimeter,” he said. “For 12 months the council has been trying to get the landlord to secure the property and get it back into a good state of repair.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been liaising with residents and pushing the council to take the strongest possible action so they don’t have to suffer living on the same road with the property in that state.<\/p>\n

“I hope the property is cleaned up and the landlord takes responsibility for the people in there and that they want to be part our lovely community.”<\/p>\n

The council was approached for comment.<\/p>\n
