A councillor claimed it had originated from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/people-warned-keep-windows-doors-32110743\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">waste being burned at a Liverpool scrapyard.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">At a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/wirral\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wirral<\/a> Council <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/people-trapped-estate-due-dangerous-32716180#comments-wrapper\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">environment committee meeting on October 20<\/a>, Cllr Gail Jenkinson raised an urgent question after she was sent a photograph that day of \u201ca massive plume of smoke which I understand appears regularly from debris being burned at a Liverpool scrap yard\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Cllr Jenkinson said the plume of smoke \u201cgoes hundreds of feet into the area and blows over to the Wirral\u201d and wanted to see action taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Labour councillor Liz Grey, who chairs the committee, said she would contact authorities over on the Liverpool side to \u201cfind out what\u2019s going on there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">After the meeting, Cllr Jenkinson told <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the ECHO:<\/a> \u201cPoor lung health is a rising problem nationally and so cleaning our air has long been a priority for the Greens and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/wirral-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wirral Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">&#8220;To see this massive, black plume of acrid smoke reaching hundreds of feet in the air and being blown across Liverpool and over to the Wirral is a cause of great concern, especially as I understand it is becoming more frequent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cAllowing these noxious gases to be released straight into the atmosphere is irresponsible and reprehensible and must be stopped immediately. I hope that the appropriate Liverpool authority will investigate and take action with all haste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">A fire took place at a metals recycling site on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/people-warned-keep-windows-doors-32110743\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Regent Road in Liverpool on July 19 operated by S Norton<\/a>. On October 16, a fire occurred at a separate site several streets away on Lyster Road <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/people-told-stay-inside-black-32689821\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">where a shredding unit had caught on fire.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Mick Claes, the environment manager at S Norton, said: \u201cAll our sites operate under strict environmental permits and are regularly inspected by the Environment Agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cWe have carried out a full internal investigation and will implement any further improvements identified \u2013 in addition to the robust controls we already have in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">&#8220;Our initial review [of the July 19 incident] indicates that the fire was most likely caused by a battery that had been inadvertently discarded within incoming waste materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cBatteries hidden in waste electrical items continue to present a growing risk across the recycling industry. We are working with the Environment Agency and industry partners to strengthen prevention measures and raise public awareness about the safe and proper disposal of batteries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cS.
