We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 gunhQQ\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>People will find the very first 5p <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/coins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coins<\/a> bearing King Charles\u2019s official portrait appearing in their wallets and pockets over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>As many as 23.2 million King Charles 5p coins are entering circulation across the UK, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/royal-mint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Mint<\/a> has announced.<\/p>\n<p>The coins were dated and minted back in October 2023 but are only being put into circulation now due to increased demand for the 5p, the Mint said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>It is another opportunity for coin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/collectors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collectors<\/a> and the public to find historic coins in their everyday change, the Mint added, this being the first time that the 5p denomination has entered circulation bearing the King Charles\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/royal-family\/king-charles-coins-2022-royal-mint-b2181981.html\" title=\"Royal Mint releases first official coins featuring King Charles III\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the introduction of the King\u2019s portrait on UK coinage<\/a> in 2022, collectors have been eagerly seeking coins bearing the new royal effigy, the Mint said.<\/p>\n<p>King Charles coins represent only around 0.2% of the 24.605 billion coins currently in circulation across the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/01K858VQN0GPQFDW9MSVQYPR43.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Millions of the 5p coins have been issued by The Royal Mint\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Millions of the 5p coins have been issued by The Royal Mint (Ian West\/PA Media Assignments)<\/p>\n<p>The new 5p coins feature an oak tree leaf design on the reverse, or \u201ctails\u201d side, signifying the tree\u2019s role as a rich habitat for biodiversity in woodlands. The oak tree has a long association with monarchs and the design highlights the King\u2019s passion for conservation.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: \u201cWe are delighted to see His Majesty\u2019s first 5p coins entering circulation following public demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe oak leaf design beautifully represents the deep connection between our monarchy and the natural world, reflecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/king-charles-iii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Charles III<\/a>\u2019s lifelong dedication to environmental conservation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese coins offer the public a wonderful opportunity to discover a piece of living history in their everyday change, and for many, finding one of these special coins could be the beginning of a fascinating journey into the world of coin collecting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Morgan added that it is \u201crare\u201d for the 5p design to change, with the last design having entered circulation in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cThis makes it not only the first time the 5p depicts His Majesty King Charles III\u2019s effigy, but also the first design change for one of the smallest coins in circulation in 17 years.\u201d The coins will be available through post offices and bank branches nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/01K858VRJ9WGK79JP8KT7YHW14.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Vasanthi Balachandar, branch manager of Jubilee Oak Post Office, displays the first 5p coins bearing the portrait of King Charles\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Vasanthi Balachandar, branch manager of Jubilee Oak Post Office, displays the first 5p coins bearing the portrait of King Charles (Ian West\/PA Media)<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Mint has also allocated a special quantity to Post Office branches with \u201coak\u201d in their name or located near to well-known trees.<\/p>\n<p>These branches include The Oaks Post Office in Dungannon, Northern Ireland; Jubilee Oak post office, Braintree in Essex; Oaktree Road Post Office, Southampton; Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands; County Oak, Brighton; Allerton Road post office (near the Allerton Oak), Liverpool; Newtown post office (Brimmon Oak), Powys, Wales; and Larkhall post office (Cadzows Oaks), Larkhall in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Russell Hancock, supply chain director at the Post Office, said: \u201cWe are incredibly proud to support the entry and circulation of this first 5p coin to bear His Majesty King Charles III\u2019s official portrait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that many coin enthusiasts visit our branches and so we\u2019re particularly pleased that our postmasters who operate branches with \u2018oak\u2019 in their name, or are located close to famous oak trees, will receive a special quantity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The release of the coins marks the third denomination bearing King Charles\u2019s portrait to enter circulation.
