The by-election is being called after the death of Labour&#8217;s Hefin David in August. There are eight candidates all vying to be elected to the Senedd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">While there are <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/cost-96-senedd-members-revealed-32549131\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">major changes happening in the Senedd from May 2026,<\/a>impacting the constituencies and the voting system, this election is being fought on the same constituency boundary and first past the post, which means the person with the most votes wins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">The Senedd constituency of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/caerphilly\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"CaerphillyLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Caerphilly<\/a> has always been held by <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LabourLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> and is also represented by the party in Westminster. The by-election could have knock-on implications to people all over Wales if Labour lose as it would crucially <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/election-replace-hefin-david-not-32406347\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">change the government&#8217;s position in the Senedd<\/a> and has seen Mark Drakeford make a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/politics\/mark-drakeford-warns-voters-caerphilly-32680294\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">direct plea to voters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/politics\/first-poll-ahead-caerphilly-election-32685611\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">One poll has been carried out, specifically asking people in Caerphilly<\/a> how they plan to vote, and it projects Reform UK will win, Plaid will come second and Labour will fall to a distant third.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">How do I vote?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">You must be registered to vote to do so, but as long as you are registered, you can go to your polling station between 7am and 10pm. You should have received a polling card telling you where to vote. If you haven\u2019t received your polling card contact your local council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">You can also find your polling station via <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caerphilly.gov.uk\/my-council\/voting-and-elections\/forthcoming-elections-2025\/senedd-by-election\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the Caerphilly council website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">What if I can&#8217;t get there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">If you find yourself unable to vote in person, due to medical or work reasons, you may be entitled to apply for an emergency proxy vote. You are advised to contact the council for more information about an emergency vote.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">When will the result be known?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Votes are being counted overnight on October 23 meaning a result will be available in the early hours of October 24. We&#8217;ll be bringing you that live.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Who are the candidates?<\/strong><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Steve Aicheler &#8211; Liberal Democrats<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2_AWR_MAI_Steve-Aicheler_190925JPG.jpg\" alt=\"Steve Aicheler\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Steve Aicheler is the Welsh Liberal Democrats  candidate for the Caerphilly Senedd by-election(Image: Welsh Liberal Democrats)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">A councillor on Bedwas, Trethomas, and Machen Community Council and a governor of Machen <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/wales-schools\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">School<\/a>, he says his campaign will focus on the theme of \u201ccare\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Apart from his work in the community he is operations manager for Enterprise Educators UK where he lobbies national and regional government on entrepreneurship and education policy among other responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">He has previously founded multiple businesses in Caerphilly and has lived in Machen with his family for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Anthony Cook &#8211; Gwlad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Chair of Gwlad&#8217;s Rhymni and Sirhowy Valleys branch, the former Royal Welsh soldier says he is from a family of miners. A dad of three, he says he loves adventures in Parc Penallta and Gelligaer Common.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Gareth Hughes &#8211; Green Party<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_Gareth-HughesFreelance-journalist-broadcaster-and-producer.jpg\" alt=\"Gareth Hughes has previously reported for ITV and BBC\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Gareth Hughes has previously reported for ITV and BBC(Image: Gareth Hughes)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">A long-time Caerphilly resident, he worked as a journalist, political adviser, educator, housing campaigner, and community activist. He also served on the former Rhymney Valley District Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">He was the founder of the Welsh housing association movement and became the first director of the Welsh Federation of Housing Associations, now known as Community Housing Cymru. As a journalist, he reported and presented for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/itv\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">ITV<\/a> Wales, produced documentaries for the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/bbc\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a> and ITV, and regularly commented on Welsh politics for Radio Cymru and Radio Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Speaking about his selection, Gareth Hughes said: \u201cI believe Wales needs positive political change \u2013 change that puts people and the planet first. The Green Party is the only left-wing party that truly aligns with my values, and I am determined to give Caerphilly a strong, honest, and committed voice in the Senedd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Gareth Potter &#8211; Conservatives<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_IMG_8548.jpg\" alt=\"Man wearing glasses in a suit\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Welsh Conservative candidate Gareth Potter(Image: Welsh Conservatives)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Gareth Potter was born in Pontypool and grew up in Trevethin. He now lives in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/ebbw-vale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebbw Vale<\/a> with his wife and two children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Before getting involved in politics he worked in the retail and charity sector. Darren Millar MS, leader of the Welsh Conservatives, described him as an &#8220;experienced campaigner&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Ll\u0177r Powell &#8211; Reform UK<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_Llyr3.jpg\" alt=\"A man in a blue suit jacket with his arms folded in front of Caerphilly Castle\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Llyr Powell (Image: John Myers)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Described as a &#8220;communications specialist&#8221; who has worked in public, political and charitable organisations, he previously held the role of Reform&#8217;s head of communications in Wales. The party said he had lived and worked in Caerphilly for the last five years and &#8220;called the area home for much of his professional life&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">The fluent Welsh speaker previously stood as a Tory candidate in two <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/cardiff\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Cardiff<\/a> Council elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Speaking about his selection in Caerphilly alongside Reform leader Nigel Farage, Llyr Powell said: &#8220;The local communities in Caerphilly deserve a Senedd member who will stand up for them after over 26 years of stagnation from Labour and Plaid. Only Reform UK is offering a chance at genuine change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Richard Tunnicliffe &#8211; Labour<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_rbp_mai240925richard41500JPG.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Richard Tunnicliffe(Image: WalesOnline\/Rob Browne)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">A financial analyst who runs a children\u2019s publishing company with his wife. The couple live in Caerphilly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">He has three sons and all three have additional learning needs. He joined Labour in 1988 and said he had recently rejoined the party after being encouraged to do so by Hefin David \u2013 the man he wishes to succeed.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Roger Quilliam &#8211; UKIP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Roger Quilliam&#8217;s X page says he is a 22-year-old Philosophy, Religion, and Ethics student who serves on UKIP&#8217;s NEC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Announcing his candidacy, he wrote: &#8220;I am officially running in the upcoming Senedd by-election in Caerphilly. UKIP is the only party who will scrap the Senedd. Up to 1-in-3 in Wales want the Senedd gone. The people of Caerphilly deserve a unionist voice.
