Slovakia had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-countries-move-pull-plug-on-russia-gas-hungary-slovakia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vowed to hold up the sanctions\u00a0package<\/a>\u00a0unless it was given assurances on how to combat high energy prices and aid heavy industries like car making.<\/p>\n<p>Austria and Hungary\u00a0had also expressed concerns over the sanctions package but lifted their veto in recent days.\u00a0Slovakia was the last country blocking the\u00a0new restrictions\u00a0\u2014 and\u00a0had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/slovakia-robert-fico-vow-derail-key-eu-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sought concessions<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0statement to be agreed at Thursday\u2019s summit of EU leaders in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All our demands \u2026 were included [in the statement],&#8221; a Slovak diplomat confirmed to POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>The summit will seek to stress the EU&#8217;s support of Ukraine, in light of U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s pressure on Kyiv to cede territory to Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to join parts of the meeting in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders are expected to emphasize the need to further hit Moscow with hefty sanctions over its war against Ukraine.
