{"id":521719,"date":"2025-10-23T08:24:26","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T08:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/521719\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T08:24:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T08:24:26","slug":"pensioner-swapped-port-glasgow-for-new-york-in-her-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/521719\/","title":{"rendered":"Pensioner swapped Port Glasgow for New York in her youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Nancy Mitchell marked the special occasion with two parties in a row \u2013 one day after another.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The proud Portonian enjoyed her day with family and friends at Marchmont House Care Home.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Nancy\u2019s niece Janette Barr, 72, said: \u201cWe had a lovely party. We had family up from England and her close friends came down from Aberdeen.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>null (Image: George Munro)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;She&#8217;s remarkable. She doesn&#8217;t believe she is 100. I always told her she would get a telegram from the Queen, though in the end it was a card from King Charles instead of Queen Elizabeth.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It was a lovely tribute to her.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Guests enjoyed sandwiches, party food and bubbly at the double celebration.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Nancy was born and bred in Port Glasgow and attended the town\u2019s Jean Street School.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When she left school she worked in the Co-operative in the town, originally in the shop and later in the office.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 1958 she left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inverclyde<\/a> to work as a nanny in New York, where she stayed for seven years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>null (Image: George Munro)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Janette said: &#8220;She had a wonderful experience in America. I remember her visiting my family on trips home. It took her six weeks to travel there on the ship. I&#8217;ve seen the pictures, it looks amazing.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When her sister died, however, Nancy returned to Port Glasgow to look after her mother, and went back to work at the Co-op.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The centenarian was still living in her own home, in Station Road, until four years ago, when her health failed a wee bit and she needed more support.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cShe is amazing,\u201d Janette said. \u201cShe still gets around, and gets up for a wee dance. She always has a smile on her face and is in good spirits.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;If she has something to tell you, she won&#8217;t hold back.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;She enjoyed her holidays. she liked going to Spain with her friend and her husband.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cShe loved her party and seeing everyone and sharing her memories and hearing about who was who and their family trees.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I am one of six, so all my siblings were there along with all our families.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Nancy was also an avid church-goer and attended, what is now the New Parish Church in Princes Street and was also active in the Women&#8217;s Guild.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Asking what she thinks is her aunt\u2019s secret of long life is, Janette quipped: &#8220;She never married and never had the stress of children!\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cShe is fit as a fiddle, she always ate healthily and loved a wee whisky &#8211; the water of life &#8211; and a wee glass of wine.
