News that Disney decided against making<\/a> a Ben Solo Star Wars movie directed by Steven Soderbergh<\/a> hit the fandom like a punch in the gut this week but, as Yoda once said, \u201cThere is another<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

A new report from The InSneider<\/a> says that in addition to Soderbergh, none other than David Fincher \u201chad conversations with Lucasfilm about directing a movie after\u00a0Episode IX,\u201d though Sneider \u201cpromised not to reveal the details of his pitch or which Episode IX\u00a0character it would\u2019ve followed.\u201d io9 reached out to Lucasfilm for comment or clarification but had not heard back as of publication. We\u2019ll update this story if, or when, we do.<\/p>\n

Of course, Fincher is not a stranger to Star Wars. Before he was the director of Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network, and many others, one of Fincher\u2019s first jobs was at Industrial Light and Magic, working on films like Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His name was also in the mix throughout the years during the prequels and even the sequels, though nothing materialized.<\/p>\n

\u201cFincher was still\u00a0interested in\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0after\u00a0Episode IX,\u201d Sneider\u2019s report continues. \u201cAnd had an interesting idea for a follow-up, but at the end of the day, for all the concessions Fincher was willing to make ahead of production\u2014namely with regard to budget\u2014he ultimately wanted final cut, which Lucasfilm simply could not offer him, making the whole negotiation moot.\u201d<\/p>\n

So it seems like while Fincher\u2019s idea didn\u2019t come nearly as close as Soderbergh\u2019s, it was something that was in the ether. Much like Guillermo del Toro\u2019s Jabba the Hutt movie, Rian Johnson\u2019s trilogy, a David Benioff and D.B. Weiss movie, and on and on.<\/a><\/p>\n
