An important casting for Greta Gerwig\u2019s<\/a> Chronicles of Narnia\u00a0movie has been settled: Emma Mackey<\/a> will portray Jadis the White Witch, the series\u2019 chief antagonist.<\/p>\n

Per the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, this marks a reunion between director and Death on the Nile star after Mackey previously appeared in\u00a0Barbie. There\u2019ve been rumors swirling around for months that Mackey, pop star Charli XCX, and The Substance\u2018s<\/a> Margaret Qualley were all in the running for the role, famously played by Tilda Swinton in the 2005 Disney movie and its two sequels, 2008\u2019s Prince Caspian\u00a0and 2010\u2019s\u00a0Voyage of the Dawn Treader.<\/p>\n

Gerwig\u2019s\u00a0Narnia\u00a0movie is reportedly based on The Magician\u2019s Nephew,\u00a0the sixth book in C.S. Lewis\u2019 youth-fantasy series. Walden Media intended to continue the earlier film series by adapting Nephew, but its contract with Lewis\u2019 estate later expired. There\u2019ve been numerous goes<\/a> at trying to adapt the remaining books, eventually resulting in Netflix picking up the rights<\/a> so it could tackle that endeavor with new movies and shows, and later got Gerwig<\/a> on board.<\/p>\n

To date, the only other casting that appears to be in the cards for the new\u00a0Narnia movie is Meryl Streep as Aslan<\/a>, the talking lion who allies with the Penvensies to fight against the Witch. Other actors will be revealed over time ahead of the film\u2019s eventual release\u2014first in theaters, then on Netflix<\/a> at a later date.<\/p>\n
