We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 gunhQQ\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/sheffield-wednesday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheffield Wednesday<\/a> have entered administration, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/efl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFL<\/a> confirming the club have automatically been deducted 12 points.<\/p>\n<p>The Owls, whose financial difficulties have been well documented in recent months, issued a statement on Friday afternoon announcing the appointment of administrators.<\/p>\n<p>The EFL followed with a statement of its own which confirmed the 12-point sanction for entering administration but pointed out the process &#8220;presents Sheffield Wednesday with the opportunity to move matters towards a successful sale and secure future under new ownership&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It brings an end to the much-maligned reign of controversial owner Dephjon Chansiri at Hillsborough, who has overseen a period of turmoil in which the club have been hit with multiple charges by the EFL for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/football\/sheffield-wednesday-dejphon-chansiri-pay-b2842712.html\" title=\"Crisis at Sheffield Wednesday deepens with fresh payment saga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failing to pay players\u2019 and staff wages on time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The deduction leaves the Championship&#8217;s bottom side on minus six points, 13 points adrift at the foot of the table, ahead of Saturday&#8217;s match against Oxford at Hillsborough.<\/p>\n<p>Owls captain Barry Bannan said he was \u201cgutted\u201d to learn that the club had entered administration but has full belief that the club can rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes you have to reach rock bottom to come back again,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd if there was ever a club that could do it, it&#8217;s this club, because the fan base we&#8217;ve got is amazing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday said they had appointed insolvency firm Begbies Traynor as administrators, something which follows \u201csignificant efforts to agree a sale to a credible future custodian in recent weeks which unfortunately could not be concluded and amid rising pressure from creditors\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The administrators take control of the club\u2019s operations from Chansiri, fan opposition of whom had led to a significant drop in matchday revenue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cc1b8d044c1bced71af45fe8e35cb4dfY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzYwMDgzMTIy-2.81555865.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dejphon Chansiri bought Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 (Martin Rickett\/PA)\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Dejphon Chansiri bought Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 (Martin Rickett\/PA) (PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p>Supporters had boycotted the club in a bid to force the Thai businessman out, not least during midweek\u2019s Championship clash against Middlesbrough, which saw the home end barely filled. <\/p>\n<p>Attendances have dropped from an average of over 26,000 last season to just over 17,000 currently, and joint administrator Kris Wigfield <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/football\/sheffield-wednesday-administration-dejphon-chansiri-b2851630.html\" title=\"Administrators issue plea to Sheffield Wednesday fans after points deduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has issued a plea for fans to return to their seats<\/a> to help pick the club back up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Supporters are the backbone of any football club,\u201d Wigfield said. \u201cThe money they spend at the gate and in the ground is vital. I&#8217;ve been a season ticket holder since 1984 and know first-hand the passion of this fanbase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now, more than ever, we need fans back in the ground &#8211; buying tickets, merchandise, pies and pints. Every penny spent will go directly to supporting the day-to-day running of this club, not to the former owner or professional costs. This will help stabilise the club and support the loyal players and staff while we secure a suitable buyer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fans have held protests calling on Chansiri to sell throughout the season, while the Government\u2019s Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also repeatedly pleaded for him to divest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-2229399516.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Fans protest against owner controversial Sheffield Wednesday owner Chansiri\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Fans protest against owner controversial Sheffield Wednesday owner Chansiri (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday have been placed under various embargoes amid tax debts and after failing to pay players and staff on time on five separate occasions this year, including in September.<\/p>\n<p>Images on social media showed seats spelling out Chansiri&#8217;s name in the North Stand at Hillsborough being ripped out, while there were also reports of queues already forming outside the stadium of fans looking to buy tickets for Saturday&#8217;s match.<\/p>\n<p>The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters&#8217; Trust described entering administration as &#8220;one of the most bittersweet days in our club&#8217;s proud 158-year history&#8221;.
