Several earring products sold by popular jewellery brand have been recalled after they were found to contain dangerously high levels of a certain chemical. <\/p>\n
Missoma, whose products have been flaunted by celebrities including Kate Middleton, Florence<\/a> Pugh and Selena Gomez<\/a>, told customers to stop wearing the eight items \u2018straight away\u2019.<\/p>\n They were found to contain excess levels of cadmium, a naturally-occurring metal commonly found in jewellery.<\/p>\n At such levels, cadmium can irritate the skin, and eventually lead to organ damage and cancer, according to health<\/a> experts.<\/p>\n Missoma said the amount found in the recalled products was \u2018low\u2019 and would not pose any \u2018immediate\u2019 risks.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/a><\/strong> newsletter or get Breaking News<\/a> <\/strong>alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n But it warned they could be \u2018toxic if ingested by young children and\/or cause adverse health effects through skin exposure over a long period of time\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t According to the UK Health Security Agency, cadmium can cause \u2018irritation in contact with the skin\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018Exposure to cadmium for a long period of time may result in damage to the bones and kidneys and may cause cancer\u2019, the organisation warns.<\/p>\n However government guidance stresses that absorption of cadmium through the skin is \u2018rare\u2019.<\/p>\n The vast majority of health problems linked to cadmium involve ingesting or inhaling it.<\/p>\n Exposure to carcinogens \u2013 the term for substances which can lead to cancer \u2013 does not guarantee cancer, which depends strongly on factors such as the amount and duration of exposure.<\/p>\n A Missoma spokesperson said: \u2018Your wellbeing is our highest priority, we always act with the utmost caution.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Following product quality checks in our factories, we have found a conformity issue with certain pieces of our jewellery.<\/p>\n \u2018Testing has shown these pieces may contain a low level of the metal\u00a0cadmium, which is in excess of the allowed level of 100ppm.<\/p>\n \u2018If your jewellery is part of this recall, we advise you to please: stop wearing it straight away and package it up away from children until it can be returned to us.<\/p>\n \u2018We remain fully committed to your safety and satisfaction and will ensure this issue is resolved promptly.
