Wales and Lions legend Sam Warburton believes that Ireland should be confident heading into their Autumn Nations Series campaign with fixtures against the All Blacks, Japan, Australia and South Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n

However, he says that returning head coach Andy Farrell will need to navigate the \u2018political tension\u2019 and the hammer blow of Joe McCarthy\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n

The powerhouse second-rower, who toured with the British and Irish Lions in July, sustained a foot injury on that trip to Australia that has ruled him out of the November internationals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ireland\u2019s edge dented<\/p>\n

Warburton<\/a> believes that McCarthy adds a real \u2018physical edge\u2019 to the team that will be sorely missed with Ireland<\/a> not being one of the most abrasive teams in world rugby.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot having McCarthy is a massive blow because I wouldn\u2019t say Ireland are the most physical team in the world. They\u2019re physical, but they\u2019re not the most physical. Suddenly, if there is no McCarthy, no Aki, no Conan and no Doris, your physical edge is taking a big dent,\u201d Warburton wrote in his Times column<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The former British and Irish Lions captain also weighed in on the lack of Munster representation in the squad, with Farrell selecting 21 Leinster players and just four from Munster despite their comprehensive victory last weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should obviously be approaching this autumn with a lot of confidence after the Lions tour but there seems to be a bit of political tension in the air, with the old Leinster-Munster differences rearing their heads after Andy Farrell selected 21 Leinster players and only four from Munster in his squad, and then Munster comprehensively beat Leinster away from home in the United Rugby Championship,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of respected observers, including the likes of Brian O\u2019Driscoll and Simon Zebo, have spoken about how players may have been selected more on reputation than form, and then there are a number of injuries, with full-back Hugo Keenan and lock Joe McCarthy out altogether, and concerns about Mack Hansen, Bundee Aki, Robbie Henshaw, Jack Conan and Caelan Doris.<\/p>\n

\u201cIreland obviously start their campaign with the plum fixture against New Zealand in Chicago and it feels this has become one of the great rivalries in Test-match rugby. It will be an occasion heaving with emotion after the famous match there in 2016, when Ireland achieved their first win over the All Blacks, and the challenge for Farrell will be to prepare his side to face a New Zealand team that are obviously together after the Rugby Championship.\u201d<\/p>\n
