{"id":526832,"date":"2025-10-25T11:03:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T11:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/526832\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T11:03:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T11:03:14","slug":"draghi-pushes-pragmatic-federalism-to-get-europe-out-of-its-predicament-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/526832\/","title":{"rendered":"Draghi pushes \u2018pragmatic federalism\u2019 to get Europe out of its predicament \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The problem, Draghi said, is that \u201cour governance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-germany-united-states-big-tech-sovereign-digital-transition\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-germany-united-states-big-tech-sovereign-digital-transition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has not changed for many years<\/a>\u201d and the European structure that exists today \u201csimply cannot meet such demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To overcome the economic, social and security challenges facing the bloc, the EU urgently needs to reform itself and change its treaties, argued the former president of the European Central Bank and author of a <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/eu-competitiveness\/draghi-report_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landmark report on the EU\u2019s competitiveness<\/a> in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA new pragmatic federalism is the only viable path,\u201d Draghi stressed. <\/p>\n<p>Such federalism would be \u201cbuilt through coalitions of willing people around shared strategic interests, recognizing that the diverse strengths that exist in Europe do not require all countries to advance at the same pace,\u201d Draghi explained. \u201cAll those who wanted to join could do so, while those trying to block progress could no longer hold others back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concretely, that would mean a multi-speed Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Such coalitions could support the emergence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/european-giants-ink-deal-space-champion-take-elon-musk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/european-giants-ink-deal-space-champion-take-elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European champions<\/a> in industrial sectors such as semiconductors or network infrastructure, cutting energy costs and pulling innovation efforts across the bloc, according to Draghi.<\/p>\n<p>But this federalist leap would require national governments to give up their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/euco-bad-boys-viktor-orban-robert-fico-friedrich-merz-bart-de-wever\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/euco-bad-boys-viktor-orban-robert-fico-friedrich-merz-bart-de-wever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">veto power<\/a>, something that has historically drawn resistance from smaller EU member countries which fear being sidelined by their larger counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time Draghi has advocated for a more federal Europe.
