A driver has been arrested and rushed to hospital after police said he ignored roadworks on the M4 this afternoon (Saturday, October 25).<\/p>\n
The driver “sought to leave the scene on foot” after “failing to observe the hard closure in place for roadworks” near Junction 18 westbound shortly after midday, police said.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police, said: “We were called at 12.15pm after an incident on the M4 westbound near junction 18 this afternoon (Saturday 25 October). “It was reported that the driver failed to observe the hard closure in place for roadworks and their vehicle a short time later had left the carriageway. The driver then sought to leave the scene on foot. “Efforts to locate the driver were carried out, supported by the National Police Air Service. “A man has subsequently been arrested on suspicion of a driving offence and officers are taking him to hospital to be checked over. \u201cVehicle recovery work will take place this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Queues of traffic were seen building in the area this afternoon, where the motorway has been reduced to one lane on a day already blighted by heavy congestion.<\/a><\/p>\n The M4 is closed in both directions<\/a> to allow steel beams for the new A432 Badminton Road Bridge to be lifted into place.
