{"id":529119,"date":"2025-10-26T12:26:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T12:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/529119\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T12:26:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T12:26:12","slug":"uk-police-arrest-wrongly-released-sex-offender-who-was-meant-to-be-sent-for-deportation-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/529119\/","title":{"rendered":"UK police arrest wrongly-released sex offender who was meant to be sent for deportation \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A former asylum seeker and convicted sex offender who was released from a UK prison in error has been located and is back in custody, British police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Ethiopian national Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu was jailed for 12 months in September for sexually assaulting a woman and a 14-year-old girl and made the subject of a five-year sexual harm prevention order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was arrested in the Finsbury Park area of north London at around 8.30am on Sunday, Scotland Yard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Metropolitan Police commander James Conway, who oversaw the operation to find Kebatu, said: \u201cThis has been a diligent and fast-paced investigation led by specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police, supported by Essex police and the British Transport Police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cInformation from the public led officers to Finsbury Park and, following a search, they located Mr Kebatu. He was detained by police but will be returned to the custody of the Prison Service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI am extremely grateful to the public for their support following our appeal, which assisted in locating Mr Kebatu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kebatu, who had been released wearing a prison-issue grey tracksuit and holding a plastic bag containing his possessions, made several train journeys across London after being freed on Friday, according to the Met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Conway had on Saturday urged anyone \u201cwho sees him, knows where he is or has any information\u201d to call 999 immediately, adding that police believed Kebatu \u201chas access to funds, and critically, in Chelmsford and London, sought assistance from members of the public, and has spoken to station staff\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 41-year-old was meant to be sent to an immigration detention centre to be deported but was released from HMP Chelmsford in Essex by mistake, it has emerged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A delivery driver described seeing Kebatu return to HMP Chelmsford in a \u201cvery confused\u201d state \u201cfour or five times\u201d, only to be turned away by prison staff and directed to the railway station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The driver, named only as Sim, told Sky News that he saw Kebatu come out of the prison saying: \u201cWhere am I going? What am I doing?\u201d and hanging around for about 1\u00bd hours as he tried to find out where he should be going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said Kebatu knew he should be deported but the prison staff were \u201cbasically sending him away\u201d and saying to him: \u201cGo, you\u2019ve been released, you go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The driver said: \u201cHe kept scratching his head and saying: \u2018Where do I go, where do I go?\u2019 The fourth or fifth time [he went into the reception] he was starting to get upset, he was getting stressed. I\u2019m not sticking up for the guy, but in my eyes he was trying to do the right thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe knew he was getting deported, but he didn\u2019t know where he was going or how he should get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kebatu appeared to have been spotted later in Chelmsford town centre asking for assistance before getting on a train to London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Essex police on Saturday confirmed that Kebatu was seen catching a train at Chelmsford railway station at 12.41pm on Friday. Met police confirmed he was seen getting off the train in Stratford in east London at about 1.10pm on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As a result, the Met was handed responsibility for the investigation on Saturday morning, the force said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A statement from Essex police on Saturday morning said that officers had \u201cworked through the night\u201d to track Kebatu\u2019s movements, including \u201cscouring hours of CCTV footage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/2025\/10\/25\/complication-for-keir-starmer-as-lucy-powell-wins-labours-deputy-leadership-race\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Complication for Keir Starmer as Lucy Powell wins Labour\u2019s deputy leadership raceOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Prison Service sources said the release from HMP Chelmsford was caused by human error. It is understood the prison officer who authorised the release has been removed from duties while an urgent investigation takes place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the Telegraph, Kebatu was wrongly categorised as a prisoner due to be released on licence and handed a \u00a376 (\u20ac87) discharge grant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One prison source described the incident as a \u201cdisaster waiting to happen\u201d because of the high volume of releases being processed by inexperienced staff, and dozens of prisoners serving different tariffs being released at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aaron Stowe, the president of the Criminal Justice Workers Union (CJWU), called Kebatu\u2019s mistaken release \u201ca profound failure of duty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cThe release of Hadush Kebatu is a betrayal of the victims, the community, and the principles of justice. We demand a full investigation and immediate reforms to ensure this never happens again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mike Rolfe, the CJWU\u2019s general secretary, added: \u201cThe justice system is stretched to breaking point, the public\u2019s confidence is collapsing, and those tasked with enforcing the law are left to pick up the pieces of political cowardice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The father of Kebatu\u2019s teenage victim told Sky News: \u201cThe justice system has let us down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kebatu was found guilty of five offences last month after attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl twice, before sexually assaulting her, and sexually assaulting a woman and trying to kiss her, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He committed the offences just days after arriving in the UK on a small boat and taking up residence at the Bell hotel in Epping. His case triggered protests outside the hotel, which far-right activists sought to exploit, leading to assaults on police officers and 32 arrests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At his trial, the district judge Christopher Williams said Kebatu posed a \u201csignificant risk of reoffending\u201d, was \u201cmanipulative\u201d and had acted \u201cignorantly and repulsively\u201d towards the woman he had assaulted.
