Police in France have arrested suspects in connection with the theft of Napoleonic crown jewels<\/a> from the Louvre Museum in Paris last weekend, in what was one of the most high-profile heists in recent history. <\/p>\n

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the suspects were arrested on Saturday evening, and that one of them was detained while attempting to flee the country from Charles de Gaulle Airport. She did not say how many suspects were arrested or if the jewels were recovered<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Le Parisien, which broke the story, reported that the suspects were two men in their 30s from the Seine-Saint-Denis suburb of Paris. <\/p>\n

However, Beccuau did not confirm those details and criticized French media for leaking information about the investigation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This revelation can only hinder the investigative efforts of the 100 or so mobilised investigators, both in the search for the stolen jewellery and for all the perpetrators. It is too early to provide any specific details,” Beccuau said.<\/p>\n

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez praised “the investigators who have worked tirelessly, just as I asked them to, and who have always had my full confidence.”<\/p>\n

Due to the severity of the crime, police will have 96 hours to question the suspects.<\/p>\n

The brazen heist a week ago shocked France and captivated art lovers worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Investigators say the thieves entered and exited the museum in under four minutes on Sunday morning, escaping with eight pieces from France\u2019s Crown Jewels. Four thieves, masked and hooded, arrived on motor scooters and two entered the museum via the Seine-facing facade at around 9:30 a.m. local time, shortly after the museum\u2019s opening. Construction work aided their heist, as a cherry picker allowed them to access the Apollo Gallery jewel room directly on the first floor, which is less than 300 yards from the famed Mona Lisa.<\/p>\n

The stolen items include emerald- and sapphire-encrusted diadems, necklaces, and brooches once worn by the wives of Napoleon Bonaparte and other 19th-century royals. One piece\u2014the Empress\u2019s crown, fitted with over 1,000 jewels\u2014was found outside the Museum. Other jewels included a tiara and necklace worn by Queen Marie-Am\u00e9lie and Queen Hortense, dating to the early 19th century. Officials estimate the collection’s value at roughly $100 million.<\/p>\n

Officials revealed that surveillance footage showed the thieves entering “calmly” and smashing display cases containing the jewels. France’s Culture Minister Rachida Dati said there was “no violence” during the heist, which she described as “very professional.”<\/p>\n

The heist has also placed President Emmanuel Macron and Louvre director Laurence des Cars under renewed pressure.<\/p>\n

Macron<\/a> referred to the incident as \u201can attack on a heritage that we cherish because it is our history,\u201d and vowed to \u201crecover the works\u201d and bring the perpetrators \u201cto justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justice Minister G\u00e9rald Darmanin later acknowledged serious failures, saying that the fact a freight lift could be installed on a public street outside the Louvre without being detected \u201cshows that our systems must be reassessed.\u201d He added that the incident \u201cprojects a negative image of France\u201d and confirmed that a full security review is underway.<\/p>\n
