A viable device was discovered and made safe during a security alert in Londonderry.<\/p>\n
Cordons were put in place and a number of residents evacuated in Campion Court in the Waterside area of the city.<\/p>\n
A rest centre for residents was been opened at the nearby Hillcrest Community Centre.<\/p>\n
The PSNI on Sunday said the security alert had ended and that they were \u201cthankful\u201d that the device did not \u201cdetonate before being discovered\u201d.<\/p>\n

Detective Inspector Hanbidge said: \u201cShortly after 5.35pm on Saturday, 25th October, we received a report that a device had been left at a residential property in the Campion Court area.<\/p>\n
“Officers attended, alongside Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO), who examined the device.<\/p>\n
“It was deemed to be viable and made safe before it was removed for further forensic examination.<\/p>\n
\u201cA number of local residents had to be evacuated from the area, and we thank them for their patience while this safety operation was carried out.”<\/p>\n
Detective Inspector Hanbidge continued: “This device posed a serious risk to the local community. We’re thankful it did not detonate before it was discovered.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would ask that the public be vigilant to any suspicious items or behaviour in their area, and report any concerns to us immediately.<\/p>\n
“Officers will continue to maintain a presence in the area today as we conduct further enquiries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would appeal to anyone with any information in relation to the incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1161 25\/10\/25.\u201d<\/p>\n
SDLP Waterside councillor Martin Reilly condemned the alert.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cThose responsible for leaving a suspect device at Campion Court have caused inconvenience and worry for residents in this part of the Waterside.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’ve had families disrupted on a cold, wet evening and the Top of the Hill community want this type of disruption to end.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m glad this alert has ended and residents were able to return to their homes.
