He never stopped seeing beauty.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Until the day he died, he spoke of the trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That joy and wonder never left him,&#8217; she said. &#8216;He died naturally, with all of us holding him. It was beautiful.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Those memories, she said, stand in stark contrast to the fear and panic portrayed in In Love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;People say they&#8217;d rather be dead than have dementia. for a brief moment \u2014 and euthanized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Reviewers warned that such cases expose deep flaws in how capacity is assessed and consent verified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;People are being approved for assisted death out of fear \u2014 fear of decline, fear of being a burden \u2014 not because they&#8217;re suffering intolerably right now,&#8217; Coelho said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Only 13 percent of dementia patients who die by MAiD ever see palliative care. Once treated, he got better \u2014 and we had more precious months together.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She worries about families without her medical knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Patients trust the system. But sometimes the system gives up on them,&#8217; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Coelho believes dementia care must focus on meeting needs, not ending lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If people with dementia have their needs met, their quality of life can be high. The suffering comes when those needs are ignored.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Coelho admits she hasn&#8217;t read Bloom&#8217;s memoir but is deeply uneasy about its premise \u2014 a devoted wife helping her husband die.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Supportive couples that help each other die always worry me,&#8217; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;What looks like love can sometimes be coercion. When death is presented as beautiful, it encourages more of it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;MAiD was meant to be an exceptional last resort for intolerable suffering,&#8217; she added. &#8216;When Hollywood sells it as an act of love, it becomes entertainment \u2014 and that&#8217;s profoundly irresponsible.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Clooney&#8217;s star power, she fears, will send a scary message to the roughly 8 million Alzheimer&#8217;s sufferers across the US and Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If Canada can&#8217;t protect people with dementia \u2014 the most vulnerable among us \u2014 then our system isn&#8217;t safe. And stories that glorify dying instead of living make it even less so.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Advocates for people with disabilities share her outrage. For her,\u00a0this is not about politics or religion \u2014 it&#8217;s about human dignity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;My father showed me that even when memory fades, life still has beauty,&#8217; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;He couldn&#8217;t remember names, but he remembered love. He noticed the trees. He found joy.
