In this edition, you\u2019ll learn about Grammy-winning singer-songwriter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/tags\/lucy-dacus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lucy Dacus<\/a>, whose companion album, Forever Is a Feeling: The Archives, is available to stream <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2K91mmZiTrqVmt3ZRoosk6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now<\/a>. The album will be available on vinyl <a href=\"https:\/\/lucydacus.store\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001l0ifqddr3broo@published\" data-word-count=\"63\">This is a trick question, because you\u2019re not supposed to eat or drink anything before going to bed. But a few of my band and crew members did have a little secret tradition where we would eat ice-cream sandwiches before bed on tour, so that\u2019s pretty cute. And my dad told me to take magnesium pills, so I\u2019m going to start doing that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001n0ifq78sx7t9f@published\" data-word-count=\"75\">When I was in high school \u2014 so just take this with a grain of high school \u2014 I had this thing called \u201cposi-nihilism,\u201d where it was like, Nothing matters and nothing has meaning, but that\u2019s not so bad; that\u2019s very freeing. We can do anything \u2014\u00a0or if we want to make our own meaning, great! That was my ethos as a teenager. So maybe something similar to that, or some sort of tree-root-systems worship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001p0ifqxykek3fg@published\" data-word-count=\"69\">Maybe collagen? Actually, I wouldn\u2019t do this, so don\u2019t reach out to me, collagen people. But I started taking it on a whim, and then when I stopped taking it, I really noticed, which let me know that it is real. I feel like my joints feel better when I take it, and all my friends I\u2019ve told to take collagen are like, \u201cI can\u2019t believe this is real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001r0ifq4nocze8v@published\" data-word-count=\"45\">I usually say that \u201cThe people in my life will die without peace.\u201d That\u2019s my fear. But also, more personally, when I\u2019m in a bad way, every time I walk into a dark room, I think there\u2019s going to be somebody waiting to kill me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001t0ifq2iptawqe@published\" data-word-count=\"64\">I rewrote one of my songs with a bunch of children yesterday. That was cute. It was part of that Celebrity Substitute Recess Therapy thing, where that sweet guy Julian [Shapiro-Barnum] gets people to hang out with kids. And now I\u2019m afraid to play the song live again, because I fear I will say the new children lyrics. It was so cute and catchy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58em2z002y3b745xws1dxf@published\" data-word-count=\"31\">I also hung out with a new group of friends, including Daniel Caesar, who just put out a new record that is really beautiful, Son of Spergy. It\u2019s really, really gorgeous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001v0ifqvkvwkfzn@published\" data-word-count=\"82\">I read the little notice when I opened this Zoom that was like, \u201cCan we collect your data?\u201d So that\u2019s the last thing. Before that, I read some texts from my friends. I\u2019m in New York and I don\u2019t live here, so I\u2019m just trying to coordinate seeing a bunch of people who are in town. What I learned is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/hayley-williams-paramore-music-history-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hayley Williams<\/a> just left and my friend Jane just got back to town. So I\u2019m going to try to hang with Jane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001x0ifqd2i89l9t@published\" data-word-count=\"22\">Yesterday I was walking around Central Park, and there was this table of odds and ends, and I bought a wooden turtle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk5001z0ifq17mmdim7@published\" data-word-count=\"57\">Everything I thought of so far, I\u2019m not willing to say. [Laughs.] Um, I caught the tail end of my friend getting pitched a company on the street by this guy who\u2019s starting a credit-card business where you have to spend like $15K a month. And I\u2019m like, How pointless and evil is that? That was stupid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk500210ifquoot8geo@published\" data-word-count=\"68\">I hated every second I was in Las Vegas. I\u2019ve been there once with my mom and my brother. We were only on the Strip, and I just felt the depression descending upon me. There are other parts of Las Vegas I\u2019ve heard that are cool to be at so maybe I would go there, but maybe I don\u2019t need to go back to the Las Vegas Strip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk500230ifqb2msutuw@published\" data-word-count=\"51\">Thank God yes \u2014\u00a0and I\u2019ve done this before, so I luckily feel as though I could do it again. Frankly, I kind of think that Julien would love if I stopped doing this and she had to support me. [Laughs.] So I think I\u2019m kind of blessed and set with that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk500250ifqx98r5mmv@published\" data-word-count=\"53\">I feel like I have to say Survivor. I don\u2019t know if my back pain could handle it, but I\u2019m curious how I would do on Survivor or Traitors. I\u2019d want to do it without the cameras. I don\u2019t want anyone to watch. I just want to know what it\u2019s like to compete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58i1ya003p3b740t4gp8s2@published\" data-word-count=\"72\">I think on Survivor, I would try to suss out who I think should win, and then I would align with them and try to go as far as I could with them. Because then if I lost, at least the person I want to win could win. On Traitors, I think I\u2019d just roll with the punches. It depends on what you know. If you know nothing, what can you do?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk500270ifqqg2p8d5v@published\" data-word-count=\"48\">I do this thing where I\u2019m constantly digging my nails into my fingers. I don\u2019t notice that it\u2019s happening, and then people have to tell me, \u201cStop that!\u201d I have no idea how I would stop. It\u2019s not that bad; it\u2019s just a little tic that I have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58plnk004u3b746008ro6u@published\" data-word-count=\"37\">I\u2019m afraid of being reliant on anything. Who\u2019s the conductor of the L.A. Phil? I\u2019ll look it up. [Looks it up.]\u00a0Gustavo Dudamel. I don\u2019t actually know anything about him, except that he is a very knowledgeable conductor. I just don\u2019t actually know that much about music, so it would be cool to be in someone else\u2019s brain instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002b0ifqliuyu10m@published\" data-word-count=\"26\">There was a day that I ate so much sugar. That was messed up. I was self-punishing. I didn\u2019t feel good for a full day after.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58j4f4004a3b7441hriilb@published\" data-word-count=\"103\">We were in Manhattan and went to this place, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/article\/secret-restaurant-chains-in-nyc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I\u2019m donut ?<\/a>, which is a Japanese doughnut chain, and their first location out of Japan just opened in Manhattan. I actively wanted to try that. They have a PBJ doughnut, which was delicious. So that was on purpose. But then some sweet strangers bought us a bunch of sweets and pastries at a shop, so then I ate those. Then my friend took me on a surprise trip to the Russian Tea Room, which has a sandwich tower but also scones and macarons and chocolate. So it was really super-duper overboard that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002d0ifqvft4y0nc@published\" data-word-count=\"62\">I don\u2019t think I\u2019m jealous of any family members, except maybe my brother. He\u2019s a sculptor in rural Tennessee, and that sounds like glitzy glamor, but it\u2019s actually like putt-putt courses and roadside attractions. So he makes these giant things \u2014\u00a0and he should honestly be paid more \u2014\u00a0but he can think in this huge scale that I don\u2019t think I think about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002f0ifqo6rur3ig@published\" data-word-count=\"92\">I\u2019ve never dyed my hair because when I was young I loved silver hair, and all the adults were like, \u201cYou just have to wait. It\u2019s gonna happen.\u201d I think I saw silver hair as valuable as silver jewelry; it was like silver hair and silver jewelry were basically gold. Now I have a ton of gray hairs coming in. My birth mother went gray at 25, and I\u2019m on my way and I just want to watch \u2019em. But maybe when I\u2019m older, when they\u2019re all in, I\u2019ll dye my hair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002h0ifqojudnjb4@published\" data-word-count=\"29\">I\u2019d go where I have friends \u2014 probably Ireland or Scotland or France. Spain is awesome. And I do think about this, which is why I have an answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002j0ifqpp448zii@published\" data-word-count=\"112\">That\u2019s a crazy question. Okay, this is kind of an unspecific thing, but some people just have a good sense of humor, and it protects them when I wish they would get their feelings hurt more. Like, people who I think deserve to be made fun of can kind of just laugh it off. I do think that\u2019s a good principle. If you were a good person, and you had self-esteem and self-respect, and other people came at you, to just be like, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t matter. That\u2019s silly\u201d \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s a good scenario. But when it\u2019s people who I don\u2019t like, I\u2019m just like, You shouldn\u2019t laugh this off. You should be listening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002l0ifql625cmhz@published\" data-word-count=\"31\">No, not my usual. I had some mushroom-labneh toast, and I\u2019m drinking this crazy drink with apple-cider vinegar, turmeric, ginger, and cayenne. It\u2019s honestly weird, but I\u2019m trying to get healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002n0ifqpu8s4ahe@published\" data-word-count=\"17\">Maria Bamford. [Laughs.] Is that everyone\u2019s answer to this? I think Maria Bamford is funny as hell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002p0ifq9dhnpbju@published\" data-word-count=\"93\">There\u2019s so much comedy that\u2019s not funny. I don\u2019t go to comedy that often, but I would say 80 percent of the time I do, I am booing from the crowd. I think that it\u2019s possible to be funny and not make fun of disabled people or non-white people or trans people. These comedians are lazy \u2014\u00a0like really fucking lazy, and it\u2019s not funny. And I don\u2019t like when people are like, \u201cOh, come on, have a good sense of humor.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cNo. Have a better sense of humor. This is stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002r0ifq1l49dy4p@published\" data-word-count=\"73\">I have a lot of bird-friendly trees in my backyard, and we get a lot of hummingbirds. So I sit on the back porch in the morning, and I watch the hummingbirds. And they sit, which is not super-common \u2014\u00a0like, we mostly see them flying around but they\u2019ll just sit down. And my friend\u2019s mom was like, \u201cThat means that they feel like they\u2019re safe.\u201d So I love sittin\u2019 with a sitting hummingbird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002t0ifql581qabz@published\" data-word-count=\"53\">Something that I find pretty ugly is these single-use cups. I just think about how many a day are getting thrown away, or how at the end of the day in a city, you walk around and there are just trash cans full of these things. That and plastic water bottles. It\u2019s gross.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh58bvk6002v0ifq94muqfkc@published\" data-word-count=\"111\">I actually think about this a lot, because I think the actual good question is \u201cHow could we take care of ourselves without money?\u201d Really, it\u2019s, \u201cWhat money would it take at this point to set up a way where food, water, and shelter are sustainable?\u201d So I\u2019m looking into this and trying to figure out how this is possible. I definitely couldn\u2019t do it alone; it\u2019d have to be some sort of cooperative situation, but I would love to figure out the answer to this. I\u2019m sure people are like, \u201cA billion dollars!\u201d or \u201cA hundred million dollars!\u201d But I think it\u2019s actually a smaller number than people would think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmh5959ej005c3b74n8hwl0u0@published\" data-word-count=\"33\">Normal \u2014\u00a0like car accident, illness, heart attack. One of the usuals. I\u2019m not special. It\u2019ll probably be one of those regular-type things. I\u2019m hoping I get old though.
