{"id":532241,"date":"2025-10-28T01:11:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T01:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/532241\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T01:11:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T01:11:12","slug":"big-expansion-of-licensing-system-in-london-borough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/532241\/","title":{"rendered":"Big expansion of licensing system in London borough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Islington council in north London is to significantly expand its selective licensing scheme.<\/p>\n<p>It currently applies to Finsbury Park, Hillrise and Tollington wards, but will be extended to seven more wards: Barnsbury, Caledonian, Tufnell Park, Mildmay, Highbury, Junction and, Laycock.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the borough-wide additional House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) licensing scheme \u2013 covering homes shared by three or four unrelated people \u2013 will be renewed beyond its February 2026 expiry until 2031.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This expansion will bring thousands more privately rented homes under regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a third of homes in Islington are privately rented, and the council says it \u201cis committed to standing alongside renters who too often face poor conditions and rising rents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson adds: \u201cEveryone in Islington deserves a decent, safe and genuinely affordable place to live. We\u2019ve listened to residents, landlords and housing campaigners and we\u2019re taking action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile many landlords in Islington act responsibly and maintain their properties well, we continue to hear from hundreds of renters who feel unsafe and unheard, while their rents keep rising. This new scheme is about giving renters the protection they need\u2014and the quality housing they deserve.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the public consultation before the licensing was confirmed, the council received 1,081 responses.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Islington council in north London is to significantly expand its selective licensing scheme.
