{"id":532659,"date":"2025-10-28T06:06:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T06:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/532659\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T06:06:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T06:06:16","slug":"opposition-to-mercosur-trade-deal-waning-as-crunch-eu-vote-approaches-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/532659\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition to Mercosur trade deal waning as crunch EU vote approaches \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Opposition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a>\u2019s controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercosur\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercosur\/\">Mercosur<\/a> trade deal is believed to be waning as a crunch vote to approve the agreement approaches. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Government, which has committed to oppose the deal due to concerns it could hurt beef <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/farmers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/farmers\/\">farmers<\/a>, is weighing up what way to vote should it become apparent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/22\/no-guarantee-mercosur-trade-deal-can-be-stopped-says-heydon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/22\/no-guarantee-mercosur-trade-deal-can-be-stopped-says-heydon\/\">the trade pact is likely to pass<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Mercosur agreement, negotiated by the European Commission, the EU\u2019s powerful executive arm that leads trade policy, would lower barriers to goods being sold between European states and Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under the agreement some 99,000 tonnes of beef could be exported to the EU from the South American countries each year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Irish beef farmers fear this may lead to cheaper South American meat undercutting demand for exports of Irish steaks and burgers elsewhere in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government is likely to come under political pressure from Sinn F\u00e9in, Independent rural TDs, the Irish Farmers\u2019 Association (IFA) and other farming groups to vote against the trade deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Mercosur agreement needs the support of a weighted majority of EU states to be approved, as well as a simple majority of MEPs in the European Parliament. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Opposition to the European Union&#x2019;s controversial Mercosur trade deal is believed to be waning. Photograph: Allison Dinner\/European Pressphoto Agency <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/22\/no-guarantee-mercosur-trade-deal-can-be-stopped-says-heydon\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018No guarantee\u2019 Mercosur trade deal can be stopped, says HeydonOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Officials representing each of the union\u2019s 27 national governments in Brussels are scheduled to vote on the proposed deal in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One diplomatic source in Brussels involved in the negotiations said momentum to approve the deal was picking up pace, with previous opposition from several capitals wavering. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The commission has been involved in lengthy discussions with France, one of the main opponents of the deal, to try to bring French president Emmanuel Macron around to possibly backing the accord. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Senior officials in the commission believe there will be sufficient support to get the Mercosur deal over the line in the upcoming December vote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen would then travel to Brazil on December 19th or 20th, to sign the approved agreement on behalf of the EU. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The European Parliament, which has become more fractious and divided since elections last year, would still need to ratify the deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Poland, Ireland and other opponents of the deal would need to be joined by France and Italy to muster enough votes to block it.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Government sources are growing less confident about the prospects of putting together a big enough \u201cblocking minority\u201d to reject the trade pact. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The coalition deal agreed by Fine Gael, Fianna F\u00e1il and several Independents committed the Government to working with like-minded EU states \u201cto stand up for Irish farmers and defend our interests in opposing the current Mercosur trade deal\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">German chancellor Friedrich Merz is pushing for the agreement to be passed, as it will open up large new markets for carmakers and other German export industries. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A previous version of the deal negotiated in 2019 failed to win enough support inside the 27-state bloc, but there was a fresh push to try again after Donald Trump\u2019s election as US president. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman said Ireland had asked for the revised deal &#8211;
