{"id":532703,"date":"2025-10-28T06:30:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T06:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/532703\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T06:30:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T06:30:21","slug":"roy-keane-says-he-regrets-taking-one-job-but-he-did-it-out-of-respect-for-celtic-hero-martin-oneill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/532703\/","title":{"rendered":"Roy Keane says he regrets taking one job, but he did it out of &#8216;respect&#8217; for Celtic hero Martin O&#8217;Neill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Roy Keane had just missed Martin O\u2019Neill\u2019s legendary Celtic spell when he moved to Glasgow in 2005. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But that didn\u2019t stop the duo from sharing the same dressing room in their careers, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/martin-oneill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">O\u2019Neill<\/a> as the manager and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/roy-keane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keane<\/a> as his assistant.<\/p>\n<p>The most notable one was their stint with the Republic of Ireland, including guiding the nation to the European Championships.<\/p>\n<p>But one spell that Keane, who won two trophies at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celtic<\/a>, wants to forget, and seemingly isn\u2019t happy about, is their spell together at Nottingham Forest and working under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/news\/roy-keane-blasts-evangelos-marinakis-for-treating-celtic-hero-ange-postecoglou-like-something-on-the-end-of-your-shoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial owner, Evangelos Marinakis<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-1138057085-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane at Nottingham Forest.\" class=\"wp-image-84446\" \/>Photo by James Williamson \u2013 AMA\/Getty ImagesRoy Keane on working with Celtic hero Martin O\u2019Neill at Nottingham Forest<\/p>\n<p>Celtic fans would have heard about Marinakis because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/news\/ian-wright-has-questioned-decision-of-ex-celtic-boss-to-join-chaotic-owners-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Forest owner sacked Ange Postecoglou<\/a> after only 39 days in charge. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why that subject was brought up on the Overlap, and Keane was asked whether he had worked under the Greek owner before. <\/p>\n<p>When Keane answered that he did, the legendary midfielder explained that he wished that he didn\u2019t, but he only did it out of \u2018respect\u2019 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/news\/martin-oneills-five-best-and-worst-celtic-signings-as-manager-in-his-own-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celtic hero O\u2019Neill<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Paul Scholes:<\/strong> \u201cDid you work for him, Roy? Did you work for Evangelos Marinakis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keane:<\/strong> \u201cYeah, I went in with Martin. Over a few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholes:<\/strong> \u201cDid you have any dealings with him?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keane:<\/strong> \u201cOne. When I was going in there. But I only went in there to work with Martin. My respect for Martin, but I shouldn\u2019t have. But my loyalty and respect to Martin. Obviously, I made sure I had a get-out clause in the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholes:<\/strong> \u201cDid you feel that as soon as you met him?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ian Wright:<\/strong> \u201cYou don\u2019t want to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gary Neville:<\/strong> \u201cI thought you might have got on with him, to be honest with you. (Then laughs). It is sort of a good match.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wright: <\/strong>\u201cRoy doesn\u2019t want to talk about it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keane:<\/strong> \u201cNo, no, no. You get vibes of people. Of course, chemistry. I was going in as the assistant manager; it\u2019s different. I went in there to work with Martin. I went in for a few months. My plan was always to try and help Martin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain, Martin O\u2019Neill, his CV, when you think about it, and what he did at the club previously. How many games did you think Martin got at Forest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overlap panel guess between 15-25 games. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Keane: <\/strong>\u201c19, so if a manager like Martin is getting 19 games. What chance have you got? I had already left the club. I think they announced the new manager, I think, 24 minutes later, when Martin was still in the building. You are on about treating people properly. Blah, blah, blah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What happened with O\u2019Neill and Keane at Forest<\/p>\n<p>That Forest gig was the last time O\u2019Neill and Keane were in the dugout, as Sabri Lamouchi was the man who replaced the Irishman 18 minutes after he was sacked. <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neill lasted five months after moving to the City Ground in January 2019, and then was booted out days before the new season. <\/p>\n<p>By then, Keane had left, and it was suggested by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2019\/jun\/28\/nottingham-forest-sack-martin-oneill-after-just-five-months-in-charge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Guardian<\/a> in 2019 that O\u2019Neill had a \u2018falling out with the players.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But as Keane touched upon, it\u2019s not about sacking O\u2019Neill; it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/news\/why-ange-postecoglous-nottingham-forest-pay-off-will-be-bittersweet-as-alan-pardew-defends-ex-celtic-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how Marinakis is going about it<\/a> because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/news\/michael-dawson-states-ange-postecoglou-proved-at-celtic-theres-one-thing-he-was-never-going-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Postecoglou was booted out<\/a> moments after Forest\u2019s defeat to Chelsea. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Roy Keane had just missed Martin O\u2019Neill\u2019s legendary Celtic spell when he moved to Glasgow in 2005.
