Reeves<\/a> has told how the Labour government discovered that it is not \u201cdangerous\u201d politically to try to undo some of the economic harm of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/brexit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brexit;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Brexit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Before the General Election in July last year, Labour shied away from talking about Brexit,<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/brexit-hitting-uk-economy-damage-151945879.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:and the economic damage that it has done to the UK,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> and the economic damage that it has done to the UK,<\/a> amid fear of upsetting voters in the so-called \u201cRed Wall\u201d and other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Even the Liberal deal with the European Union <\/a>in the spring, Ms Reeves said the Government found that voters did not see the agreement as a Brexit betrayal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ministers gained confidence that they could talk about Brexit without \u201cre-opening a can of worms\u201d which so divided the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Appearing on a panel of leading economic figures at a business summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Chancellor was asked whether Brexit was a rejection of globalisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBrexit was a rejection of open borders,\u201d she responded at the meeting where she also signalled that <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/millions-households-hit-tax-rises-105020438.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:millions of households in the UK face tax rises in the Budget in UK face tax rises in the Budget in November.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBut if you look at the UK today when we did that deal back in May with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/european-union\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:European Union;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">European Union<\/a> to take down some of those barriers and indeed to introduce an ambitious youth mobility scheme, there was public support for that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cActually, the worry perhaps that we had as a Government that re-opening that can of worms of our relationship with the European Union might be quite dangerous actually the response increasing red tape since we left the European Union, for workers who are now locked out of the jobs market in Europe, there are obviously huge benefits from rebuilding some of those relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBut also inflation is too high in countries around the world including in the UK and one of the reasons for that is there is too much cost associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:trade;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">trade<\/a> with our nearest neighbours and trading partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Labour has made clear that the Government is not planning to rejoin the Customs Union, the Single Market or re-adopt free movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Sir Keir Starmer in May hailed a \u201clandmark\u201d new post-Brexit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/trade-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:trade deal;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">trade deal<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/eu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:EU;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">EU<\/a> which the Government claimed will boost Britain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:economy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">economy<\/a> by \u00a39 billion by 2040.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The agreement, some of whose details are yet to be finalised, included:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">* Easing trade rule to allow more UK exports of food to the Continent, and stop lorries full of produce being delayed at ports. However, it will mean Britain following EU rules on food standards which was slammed by the Tories as making the UK a \u201crule taker\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">* EU countries allowing Brits to use eGates at airports, avoiding lengthy queues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">* However, the Government made a significant concession on EU trawlers to fish in UK waters, replacing annual negotiations with longer time period of 12 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">* A \u201cYouth Experience Scheme\u201d for md:leading-8 break-words\">The Conservatives and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/nigel-farage\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nigel Farage;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nigel Farage<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/reform-uk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Reform UK;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Reform UK<\/a> attacked the deal as a Brexit \u201csurrender\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the Government believes it has public backing for the reforms as it seeks to boost economic growth in Britain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ms Reeves has also gone on the offensive, blaming Brexit, as well as the financial crash, for \u201cvery poor\u201d productivity improvements in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mr Farage, a key architect of Brexit, has admitted it has failed but blames the Tory governments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The fiscal watchdog, the Office for Budget
