Tens of millions will be spent improving a north Manchester suburb\u2019s \u2018focal point\u2019 to become \u2018somewhere people can take pride in\u2019.<\/p>\n

This week (October 27), Manchester council unveiled its final plans to rejuvenate Moston<\/a> with a new public square, green spaces, and alley-gates to tackle anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping.<\/p>\n

The \u00a390m project could also see more than 100 homes constructed in and around the neighbourhood\u2019s Moston Lane heartland.<\/p>\n

Money is being spent across Manchester\u2019s suburban centres, including Gorton<\/a> and Withington<\/a>, leader Bev Craig explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an ambitious plan for Moston and know that Moston Lane has a huge amount of potential,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew homes, a new public square, investment into the look and feel of the area, work to attract new businesses and jobs and celebrating community pride are so important.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrently missing is a space that creates a proper focal point on the high street and the new public square will be somewhere local people can come together, put on events and take pride in their district centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we also know that this community needs more social rent and genuinely affordable homes \u2013 that\u2019s why we are bringing forward two ambitious housing projects to meet demand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is only the start for Moston and our investment in this neighbourhood is part of a citywide commitment to improving high streets across the city, supporting local businesses and economic growth, while creating local spaces our residents want to spend time in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moston\u2019s makeover was first mooted in 2023, and this week\u2019s announcement is the final \u00a325m piece of the \u00a390m puzzle to revamp the area.<\/p>\n

Final details have confirmed the new public plaza will be built around Pym Street, and will require several demolitions \u2014 and for African and Caribbean food shop Moston Superstore to relocate.<\/p>\n

The council says it has already \u2018acquired a number of properties between Pym Street and Hartley Street\u2019 for demolition to make way for the square, which will \u2018front onto Moston Lane itself\u2019.<\/p>\n

Around the square, roughly 80 new apartments and town houses \u2013 including \u2018social and genuinely affordable homes\u2019 \u2014 are planned, with the blocks\u2019 ground floor units earmarked for shops and cafes.<\/p>\n

And between 30 to 40 family houses could be built on land between nearby Watermans Close and Ebsworth Street, currently grassland. The plot is currently being sold, and the town hall expects it to house homes and new \u2018high-quality green space\u2019.<\/p>\n
