Paul Scholes<\/a> has reiterated that Jadon Sancho has the talent and potential to become an elite Premier League<\/a> player – despite suffering the ultimate humiliation while in action for Aston Villa on Sunday<\/a>. The Manchester United<\/a> forward, who spent last season at Chelsea<\/a>, signed for Villa on loan in the summer.<\/p>\n

He has endured a difficult start to life at Villa Park, having failed to score or assist in five appearances. After showing glimpses in the Europa League<\/a> against Go Ahead Eagles last Thursday, there was a hope that Sancho could kick on when Villa faced Manchester City<\/a> in the Premier League on the weekend.<\/p>\n

Even if Sancho had to settle for a place on the bench, he didn’t make much of an impact when he came on. Indeed, after coming off as a first-half substitute when Emiliano Buendia limped off, Sancho was taken off before the full-time whistle. In fact, he lasted just 45 minutes before being hooked.<\/p>\n

Sancho came on for Buendia in the 29th minute before going off in the 74th minute for Evann Guessand. The England international has since been ridiculed for getting subbed as the substitute, though ex-Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood and Scholes have defended him.<\/p>\n

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Sherwood said: “I like the boy. I think he’s got \u2013 I don’t know him as a person \u2013 but I think he’s got a lot of ability.”<\/p>\n

Delivering his verdict during Sherwood’s assessment of Sancho, Scholes responded: “Loads of ability.”<\/p>\n

Sherwood then continued: “He needs to do it on a regular basis. You know, on a consistent basis, and if he does that, I mean, he\u2019s good enough to play, you know, [at an] enormous amount of clubs.”<\/p>\n

In his post-match press conference, Villa manager Unai Emery addressed Sancho’s ’embarrassing’ substitution and the decision to take him off for Guessand to come on.<\/p>\n

“Yes, sure he’s (Sancho) not happy but I did it before with Morgan Rogers, with Emiliano Buendia, with Leon Bailey, and he played 60 minutes on Thursday,” Emery said.<\/p>\n

“Today when he (Buendia) was injured, my plan was maybe in case he (Sancho) was going to play 30 minutes, but I decided to play more and he played 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

“But my plan was when he was swapped with Emiliano Buendia, the idea was maybe not playing all the minutes until the last moment. And I told him as well, he can feel it, it’s embarrassing.<\/p>\n

“Before Morgan, Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey, they felt the same when I subbed them, but it was not a punishment. And now it’s not a punishment.<\/p>\n

“He played 45 minutes, I am so happy because his impact was good, his electricity, his skill, but then to play more than now he’s not ready fit to play 90 minutes, 45 minutes is not easy enough for him and I am happy and of course, progressively he’s coming better and better.”<\/p>\n
