Known for its pro-EU, climate-focused agenda, the party has positioned itself as a moderate alternative to both the far right and traditional center-right.<\/p>\n<p>In Leiden, D66\u2019s election viewing party welcomed the first exit poll with thunderous cheers, as the crowd chanted \u201cit\u00a0is\u00a0possible\u201d \u2014 the party\u2019s campaign slogan.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting Wilders<\/p>\n<p>The election comes just two years after the Netherlands\u2019 last vote, when the far-right Freedom Party (PVV) of Geert Wilders secured\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/far-right-leader-geert-wilders-wins-dutch-election-exit-poll\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a shock victory\u00a0<\/a>and a place in power for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The government, which also included the liberal People\u2019s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the centrist New Social Contract (NSC) and the populist Farmer-Citizens Movement (BBB), was marked by infighting and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/geert-wilders-dutch-government-collapse\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collapsed less than a year<\/a>\u00a0into its term when Wilders pulled his party out of the coalition over a dispute on asylum policy.<\/p>\n<p>Migration and the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/build-more-say-dutch-politicians-ahead-of-election-but-where-housing-crisis\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Netherlands\u2019 major housing crisis<\/a>\u00a0were hot topics in the runup to Wednesday\u2019s vote.
