\u201cIt depends on how much I\u2019ve had to drink,\u201d said one shopper when asked to pronounce the name of the newly branded tram stop \u2018Trafford Palazzo\u2019.<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve done an Italian job on the Metrolink<\/a> line that takes shoppers to the home of Legoland and Primark by renaming Barton<\/a> Dock Road stop \u2018Trafford<\/a> Palazzo\u2019 after the shopping complex it serves.<\/p>\n We\u2019re told that Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) bosses have rebranded the station to make it easier to identify, although one shopper said it was pretty obvious.<\/p>\n To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <\/strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Translated out of Italian, a palazzo is a palace or mansion. That sounds very grand, but for the average Mancunian, it doesn\u2019t exactly roll off the tongue.<\/p>\n The shopping centre that used to be called Barton Square was rebranded Trafford Palazzo in 2021. TfGM has now followed suit by renaming the tram stop \u2014 one step along from the Trafford Centre station \u2014 with the same name.<\/p>\n Asked by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) to try his hand at pronouncing it, Brian Redshaw, 80, from Timperley did a manful job before saying: \u201cIt all depends on how much I\u2019ve had to drink.<\/p>\n \u201cBut I don\u2019t really think the name makes any difference. People will still come here. When you think about it, this place [Trafford Palazzo] will be here for the next 100 years, no question about it. The quality of the work in here is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group <\/strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Donna Jackson, 59, from Swinton<\/a>, was not impressed. \u201cI don\u2019t like the name at all. They should\u2019ve left it alone. It\u2019s just marketing nonsense,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Paul Teece, 67, now lives in Blackpool, but is originally from Stockport<\/a>. He and his family are staying at the Premier Inn in Manchester \u2018Trafford Palazzo\u2019 out of his mouth as they stood on the platform waiting for the next tram.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a mouthful, definitely,\u201d he said. \u201cI prefer Barton because it\u2019s a lot easier to say and, as far as I am concerned, we\u2019re stuck with it.\u201d<\/p>\n Leonie Brown, 55, is from South London and was visiting the north with a friend. She pronounced the words \u2018Trafford Palazzo\u2019 with a distinctly southern timbre and went on to say: \u201cI think the name takes it away from the originality of the Trafford Centre.<\/p>\n \u201cThey say if something isn\u2019t broken, don\u2019t fix it. I think Trafford Palazzo is a bit of a mouthful.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy are they trying to make something sound more interesting by making it Italian? It doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n Beryl McKerracher, 82, said: \u201cI like the name. I passed comment on it when I came in. It\u2019s the first time.
