JOHNS CREEK, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Johns Creek High School marching band is officially preparing for a trip across the Atlantic, set to perform in the 2027 London Parade.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust the thought of marching in something so much bigger than us is overwhelming but exciting,\u201d said Amelie Roy, the band\u2019s low brass section leader.<\/p>\n
An English delegation officially welcomed the band as participants in a ceremony held on Wednesday at the school.<\/p>\n
Bob Bone, founder of the London Parade, which is held each year on New Year\u2019s Day, explained the popularity of American marching bands at the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cAmerican marching bands are probably the most popular thing in our event,\u201d Bone said. <\/p>\n
According to Bone, the British don\u2019t have the same kind of marching bands that are found in America, because American bands revolve around performances at American football games.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe play proper football,\u201d Bone joked. \u201cWe don\u2019t have marching bands. So, there ya go.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bone founded the parade in 1986 with the intention of brightening up London on New Year\u2019s Day, often a dreary occasion.<\/p>\n
\u201cC\u2019mon! London needs brightening up!\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s dull as ditchwater on New Year\u2019s Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the ceremony, the band delivered a special performance that impressed their guests.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe band today performed as well as any high school band I\u2019ve ever heard,\u201d Bone said. \u201cGershwin\u2019s \u2018Rhapsody in Blue\u2019 ain\u2019t easy to play, even for professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bryan Daniels, the director of bands at Johns Creek High School, confirmed that preparations are already underway for the 2027 event.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve already started planning,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cWe\u2019ve already started some fundraising initiatives. Students are able to ask for donations.\u201d<\/p>\n
For students like Roy, the trip offers more than just a musical experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a huge \u2018Doctor Who\u2019 fan, so I\u2019m really excited to go to London,\u201d Roy said.<\/p>\n
