described the investment as &#8216;absolutely critical&#8217;\t<\/p>\n<p>Labour has announced a \u00a355bn funding boost for science and technology, dubbing it the largest-ever long-term investment in UK research and development (R&amp;D).<\/p>\n<p>The plan, confirmed today by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), will pour billions into British research agencies and innovation bodies through to 2030 \u2013 part of the government\u2019s drive to make Britain a \u201cscience and technology superpower\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The new tech secretary, Liz Kendall, told\u00a0City AM\u00a0the record investment is designed to \u201cgrow the economy, create good jobs and solve some of the biggest challenges we face\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00a355bn into research and development is absolutely critical to growing the economy and creating more good jobs\u201d, Kendall added. \u201cWe know that for every pound of public money that goes into R&amp;D, you get double the amount for the private sector\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The funding includes \u00a338bn for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the UK\u2019s national funding agency for science, \u00a31.4bn for the Met Office, and \u00a3900m for the UK\u2019s national academies.<\/p>\n<p>The government also confirmed an expanded budget for the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), which will increase from \u00a3220m to \u00a3400m annually by 2039\/30.<\/p>\n<p>Kendall announced the allocations on her visit to IBM\u2019s London offices on Wednesday, aligning the partnership between public and private supercomputing for medicine and clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>Investment and innovation \u2018go hand in hand\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Recent DSIT research found that every \u00a31 spent on public R&amp;D delivers \u00a38 in wider economic benefits, including private investment and productivity growth.<\/p>\n<p>The R&amp;D commitments come amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/labour-to-use-tech-to-shock-uk-economy-into-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">broader government <\/a>efforts to reignite economic growth and support its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/the-uks-modern-industrial-strategy-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modern Industrial Strategy<\/a>, announced earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Under this new framework, total R&amp;D spending from DSIT is set to reach \u00a358.5bn by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about good jobs, innovation, and better value for taxpayers\u201d, Kendall told City AM. \u201cThere\u2019s no route to above-average growth without putting tech and innovation first\u201d, she claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement also follows pressure from business groups like the CBI, which called for long-term R&amp;D targets to lift investment to 3.4 per cent of GDP by 2030, and crowd in more private
