Designer Malte Sch\u00fctt has created a modular<\/a> wooden sauna<\/a> with a gridded facade and a planted roof<\/a> that connects it to its green, garden setting.<\/p>\n

The recent graduate built the sauna, named Kassette House, using “an ecological modular, prefab system made from softwood,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The design consists of four-by-four pillars and frames, which form an easy way of assembly with minimal construction time at the worksite,” Sch\u00fctt<\/a> told Dezeen.<\/p>\n

“It is a system which is built 100 per cent in regional wood and can be disassembled completely, so it can be reused or recycled separately.”<\/p>\n

Sch\u00fctt made the freestanding sauna for a private customer in Germany and installed it in his garden.<\/p>\n

As the architect wanted to use natural materials for the project, the insulation for the sauna was made from hemp.<\/p>\n

“As it’s a sauna, it needed quite a good insulation while still being made out of natural materials,” Sch\u00fctt said. “Hemp is an excellent material for that, as it is also lightweight.”<\/p>\n

“The planted roof is working as an extra insulation layer on top, while it connects the sauna to the green garden around and lets the building not stick out too much.”<\/p>\n

The wooden sauna, which is warmed by an electric sauna heater by manufacturer HUUM<\/a>, has a gridded screen at its front that provides both privacy and decoration while still allowing users to see out.<\/p>\n

“The gridded system in the front doors was created as a privacy protection, but with still big enough gaps to have a good view from inside out into the garden,” Sch\u00fctt explained.<\/p>\n

“The front part of the sauna works as a changing or relaxation area, so the doors can also be folded open.”<\/p>\n

The architect hopes that his sauna prototype can be used as a model for small-scale modular architecture.<\/p>\n
