{"id":537524,"date":"2025-10-30T11:47:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T11:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/537524\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T11:47:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T11:47:12","slug":"video-of-person-climbing-on-dead-humpback-whale-shared-with-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/537524\/","title":{"rendered":"Video of person climbing on dead humpback whale shared with police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A video which appears to show a person standing on a dead humpback whale that was caught in a shark net in the Illawarra has been referred to New South Wales Police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Scarborough resident Hannah Barclay spotted <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-28\/dead-whale-found-wrapped-in-shark-net-coledale-wollongong\/105943666\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105943666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the dead whale off the coast at Coledale<\/a> on Tuesday afternoon after hearing about its discovery that morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Barclay, who lives locally and volunteers for the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA), said she started recording a video after she saw a small boat approaching the carcass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I thought it was someone looking after the whale, and then all of a sudden they jumped on the whale and was posing with fishing rods,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was so disgusted by their behaviour, so I videoed it and sent it to ORRCA.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The video has been shared with NSW Police by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ORRCA spokesperson Pip Jacobs described it as &#8220;confronting&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were made aware of an interaction with the whale carcass, which showed someone standing on the whale and being too close in proximity to the carcass on the water,&#8221; Ms Jacobs said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is now with these authorities to investigate further and decide next steps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Interacting with marine animals is restricted under the Biodiversity Conservation Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, a NPWS spokesperson described the behaviour as &#8220;disrespectful and dangerous&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are shocked that people would think this is acceptable,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There are diseases and physical risks as well as penalties for interfering with dead whales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Barclay said the community&#8217;s distress over the whale&#8217;s death in the net had been exacerbated by the video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We can&#8217;t have that behaviour in our community and we need to set a precedent to ensure this never happens again and that it&#8217;s not celebrated,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The whale washed up on Wombarra Beach on Tuesday evening,<strong> <\/strong>and was removed by Wollongong City Council on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image of whale tail with netting around it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bc630a0e9900485e95f11b0315df8176\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The whale was found entangled in a shark net in Coledale. (Supplied: Khynan Gardner\/ ORRCA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For public safety, we urge residents to please stay away from the carcass site and to not enter the nearby water,&#8221; a council spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Shark net debate reignites<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The whale&#8217;s death <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-08-21\/shark-nets-return-to-nsw-beaches-for-summer\/102755862\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102755862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reignited debate over the use of the shark nets <\/a>under the NSW Government&#8217;s Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed the whale was entangled in its Coledale Beach shark net which had been reinstalled at the beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ORRCA said while it believed the whale died after becoming entangled in the net, that could not be confirmed until a necropsy was done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Groups including Local Government NSW and animal rights organisations have previously called on the state government to abandon the netting program, but it returned last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The NSW government&#8217;s Shark Meshing Management Plan states the program is covered under a state agreement, as well as by the continuing use exemption in the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Peter Whish-Wilson wearing a suit on the street outside a Greens office.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/f7def5b2f985782d842750278a126ff6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Peter Whish-Wilson has called for a federal exemption allowing the meshing program to be removed.
