Russia has resumed military flights to\u00a0its Hmeimim airbase in\u00a0Syria after a\u00a0six-month pause, signaling renewed cooperation with Damascus following the ouster of\u00a0former ruler Bashar al-Assad, Bloomberg reported on\u00a0October\u00a030.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0flight-tracking data cited by\u00a0Bloomberg, at\u00a0least two Russian military aircraft\u2014an Il-62M transport plane and an\u00a0An-124-100 heavy-cargo jet\u2014have landed<\/a> in\u00a0Latakia, where the base is\u00a0located, since late October. A\u00a0person close to\u00a0the Kremlin confirmed that Moscow is\u00a0reactivating flights to\u00a0the facility.<\/p>\n

The Hmeimim airbase and Russia\u2019s naval port in\u00a0Tartus remain the country\u2019s most strategic military assets in\u00a0the Middle East, serving as\u00a0logistical hubs for its operations in\u00a0Africa and the Mediterranean. Their future came into question after Assad fled to\u00a0Moscow nearly a\u00a0year ago and was replaced by\u00a0Syria\u2019s transitional government, led by\u00a0President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Bloomberg writes.<\/p>\n

Sources told Bloomberg that even if\u00a0Russia retains a\u00a0presence in\u00a0Syria, its footprint is\u00a0likely to\u00a0shrink compared to\u00a0pre-Assad-era levels. Meanwhile, Syria\u2019s Foreign Ministry delegation has arrived in\u00a0Moscow to\u00a0reopen the country\u2019s embassy and restore consular services, according to\u00a0the state-run SANA agency.<\/p>\n
