A park in Manchester city centre was evacuated tonight after a woman had fallen into a river. It is understood police officers rescued the woman from the River Medlock in Mayfield Park.<\/p>\n

The drama began at around 4.20pm following reports that a woman had gone into a stretch of the Medlock which runs through Mayfield Park.<\/p>\n

People who were using the park have told the Manchester Evening News they were ordered to leave by park staff moments before the arrival of the emergency services. “I was told to leave by the nearest exit,” one told the Manchester Evening News.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: \u201cAt around 4.20pm today (Friday 31 October), two fire engines from Moss Side<\/a> and Gorton<\/a> fire stations, and the Water Incident Unit from Eccles<\/a> Community Fire Station, were called to reports of a person in water at Mayfield Park, Manchester.<\/p>\n

“Crews arrived quickly and provided first aid for one adult female casualty alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police<\/a> and North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters departed after approximately one hour at the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n
